In 1882, the Sagrada Família rose out of empty land on the outskirts of Barcelona. The neighborhood didn't exist yet. The Eixample (Barcelona's grand grid expansion) was still being laid out block by block, and the church sat at the edge of a village called Sant Martí de Provençals, surrounded by fields and scattered buildings.

Gaudí took over the project in 1883 from the original architect, who had resigned after a dispute over costs. He inherited a crypt and a conventional Gothic design. He threw out nearly everything and started over.

What makes the story even more remarkable is the funding. Not a single euro of government money has ever gone into building the Sagrada Família. It was conceived as an "expiatory temple," meaning it would be paid for entirely by donations from ordinary people. In the early decades, Gaudí was known to walk through the neighborhood asking neighbors directly for contributions.

The city eventually swallowed the site whole. The farmland became apartment blocks, the village became a district, and the unfinished church became the most visited monument in Spain. Today it holds the title of the world's tallest church, at 566 feet (172.5 meters).

Work began 144 years ago. The last stones are being put in place now.
