is a pioneering, family-owned agricultural company specializing in the production of certified organic cotton. We now support their new carbon farming project, a regenerative initiative that employs CO2 capturing techniques to mitigate climate change. We source Turkish cotton of the Aegean variety, known for its high-quality long and silky fibers, cultivated in this region for over 5,000 years.

Regenerative practices such as no-till farming, mulching, drip irrigation, cover cropping, and crop rotation, are all enacted to preserve soil health. They use the Carbon Flux System tool to analyze the level of CO2 sequestration and therefore ensure that their agriculture is generating a positive effect.

es una empresa agrícola familiar pionera en el cultivo de algodón orgánico certificado. Actualmente, respaldamos su nuevo proyecto de carbon farming, una iniciativa regenerativa que emplea técnicas de captura de CO2 para mitigar el cambio climático. An update on the crops in Brazil! We’re always excited to receive photos from .fernandes on the ground, and this time he’s capturing the first flowers of the season. Right now the community of farmers are receiving their training to be officially certified. While they have been practicing regenerative techniques, like polyculture - as seen in the first photo, for years, this certification ensures that brands and end wearers can put complete trust in our practices.

Regenerative agriculture is crucial for creating a more sustainable, resilient, and productive fiber system that benefits the environment, society, and the economy. Each choice is made to protect biodiversity and soil fertility, conserve water and mitigate climate change by maximizing CO2 sequestration in the soil.

When we imagine cotton, a ball of white fluff instantly comes to mind. But, in reality, the plant naturally exists in multiple colours!

Archaeological evidence shows that various shades of colour-grown cotton have blossomed wild across South America and Asia for the last 5,000 years.

A Mayan name for colour-grown cotton is “k’o reumeq’enal’’ meaning “𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐧.” Unfortunately, these beautiful tinted fibers are widely unknown and unseen, as white cotton monocultures and synthetic dyes dominate the industry.

Our OCC Brazil project works to re-establish these varieties in the textile ecosystem by incentivizing their cultivation and supporting the farming community.

Recently published, a detailed report by Earthsight exposes the unregulated cotton landscape that we aim to counter with our OCCGuarantee®, from seed to garment, certification.

Evidence shows that major fashion brands are sourcing cotton from Brazil’s Bahia state, linked to a range of concerning issues including land grabbing, illegal deforestation, violence, human rights violations, and corruption. Large agribusinesses in the area are endangering the livelihoods of farmers, locals and the area’s rich biodiversity, proving the importance of our family farm model that benefits the community and landscape. We aim to lead by example, serving as a model of true industry transparency.

Hoy 22 de marzo, Día Mundial del Agua, queremos contarte porqué en OCC apostamos por los algodones 100% orgánicos y de cultivos agro-regenerativos.

Estos métodos de cultivo realizan un uso eficiente y no contaminante del agua -entre otras técnicas sostenibles que permiten recuperan la calidad del suelo y la biodiversidad-

El monocultivo convencional de algodón utiliza químicos y es intensivo en el uso del agua (1.500 mm por m2 o más) lo que empobrece el suelo y contamina los acuíferos con el agua sobrante que arrastra residuos químicos.

Por contra, nuestro algodón OCCRegneerative® Brazil crece exclusivamente con el agua que cae en los campos durante la temporada de lluvias (una media anual de 700 mm por m2l) siguiendo el ciclo natural del agua.

En los dos proyectos agrícolas de donde obtenemos nuestros algodones orgánicos OCCBiodynamic® Egypt y OCCRegenerative® Turkey, también se siguen criterios y métodos de máxima eficiencia, como la “Irrigación por goteo”, que apenas requieren de 400 a 600 mm por m2, obteniendo igualmente fibras de gran calidad.

Today, March 22nd, World Water Day, we want to tell you why at OCC we are committed to 100% organic cotton from agro-regenerative crops.

These cultivation methods employ efficient and non-polluting water usage - among other sustainable techniques that help restore soil quality and biodiversity.

Conventional cotton monoculture employs chemicals and is water-intensive (1,500 mm per m2 or more), which depletes the soil and contaminates aquifers with excess water carrying chemical residues.

In contrast, our OCCRegenerative® Brazil cotton grows solely with the water that falls in the fields during the rainy season (an average annual rate of 700 mm per m2), following the natural water cycle.

In the two agricultural projects where we source our OCCBiodynamic® Egypt and OCCRegenerative® Turkey organic cotton, criteria and methods of maximum efficiency are also followed, such as "Drip Irrigation", which requires only 400 to 600 mm per m2, yielding fibres of excellent quality as well.

El 22 de marzo conmemora el Día Mundial del Agua, ¡y estamos emocionados de compartir cómo se gestiona el agua en nuestro origen OCCBiodynamic Egypt!

Las prácticas de gestión sostenible del agua en la granja SEKEM Wahat van desde el tratamiento de aguas residuales para riego hasta el canalizado inteligente del agua de escorrentía hacia fuentes subterráneas.

La implementación de sistemas de riego de última generación, como la pivotirrigación a gran escala, logra un ahorro significativo de agua, ¡hasta un 50% en comparación con los métodos tradicionales! 💧

Gracias a métodos biodinámicos, la retención de agua en el suelo mejora gradualmente, lo que conduce a una reducción progresiva del consumo de agua por hectárea de terreno cultivado.

Sustainable water management practices at SEKEM Wahat farm range from wastewater treatment for irrigation to intelligent channelling of runoff water to groundwater sources.

The implementation of cutting-edge irrigation systems, such as large-scale pivot irrigation, achieves significant water savings, up to 50% compared to traditional methods! 💧

Thanks to biodynamic methods, soil water retention gradually improves, leading to a progressive reduction in water consumption per hectare of cultivated land.

SEKEM collaborates with Heliopolis University to research and apply efficient irrigation technologies, the goal is to create a long-term positive impact by increasing soil water retention and progressively reducing water consumption per hectare.
