When I studied history books at school, wars and all the barbarism that they entailed, I thought of that as something very distant. “We have matured and learned from the past.” And here we are: a war is being waged a few kilometers away.
I have a knot in my stomach that reminds me every minute of what is happening… it is a mixture of sadness, anger and impotence.
What happened? Had we not matured?
I guess things were underestimated. And now the fate of Europe, of the free Europe that we want, is being played out in an unequal battle between the Ukrainians and Putin. It has fallen to Ukraine to bear this burden. The fate of many countries today depends on the courage, determination and faith in the success of thousands of Ukrainians who are defending freedom today. What a lesson in strength, leadership and courage. My knot in the stomach, my humanitarian aid and my regret is nothing compared to the tragedy they are experiencing, but the lesson they are giving to the world makes them feel like brothers today.
Some day we will look back and ask ourselves about this war and we will want to know what really happened. And we will understand that half of the world went crazy and wanted to impose its decisions by force, but that only ONE country was able to demonstrate that this is not the way to go. We will understand that, no matter what, Ukraine was INVINCIBLE.
