A very rare and impressive archaistic cloisonné enamel vessel and cover from the Qing Dynasty, dating to the Qianlong period.
Of classical ‘you’ form, the vessel is inspired by ancient ritual bronzes of the Shang Dynasty and Zhou Dynasty. The bulbous body rises from a tall, slightly flaring foot, with the neck set with animal mask handles and a looped swing handle above.
Finely decorated in vibrant cloisonné enamels on a deep blue ground, the surface is structured by gilt flanges and adorned with striking *taotie* masks—mythical motifs rooted in early Chinese ritual art, symbolizing one of the ancient “four creatures.” The domed cover echoes the same archaistic vocabulary, creating a harmonious and powerful sculptural presence.
Height: 32.5 cm
Weight: approx. 3.15 kg
Originally conceived as ritual vessels for liquid offerings, ‘you’ forms were revived during the Ming and Qing dynasties as part of a broader fascination with antiquity—combining scholarly taste with exceptional craftsmanship. This example stands out for its strong proportions, vivid enamels, and faithful interpretation of archaic design.
A museum-quality piece that bridges ancient tradition and imperial refinement.
