Incense is used in Ethiopia in various religious and meditative practices to cleanse spaces, enhance focus, connect with the divine, and promote a sense of peace and tranquility through its aromatic smoke, with different scents associated with specific spiritual intentions.

Fun fact: at every coffee ceremony, it is expected to burn frankinsense and that, somehow, makes every cup of coffee more special.

Elevate your summer style with the Borsa Tote Bag. It is made with extra thick cotton that is meticulously hand spun by staff at Sabahar. Most of our hand spun cotton is purchased through a network of women spinners... but the extra thick cotton has to be spun in house to ensure it is done just right. The bag is durable and beautiful: perfect for the beach, pool, or resort.

If you have seen one of our towels that seems to have 2 different shades of white cotton, or a dyed towel that has blocks of slightly different shades of color, you can start to understand how the ‘touch’ of each woman has an impact on the final product.

The difference in thickness or in twist may seem very slight when we purchase the yarn from women, but after dyeing and weaving, the differences are always more visible.

Such differences confirm that our products are authentic - the beauty created by so many skilled hands. We hope that you also celebrate these differences and understand that your purchase helps preserve this ancient craft.

We are so grateful to our handspinning department. The art of hand spinning is an integral component of Ethiopia's cultural heritage. The skill is passed from mother to daughter and has been practiced for centuries throughout the country. Traditionally, women would collect the cotton flowers from their personal cultivation, remove the seeds and spin it into uneven, knobbly thread.
