Tesla and California utility PG&E launched a new program that will pay eligible Powerwall owners to send extra electricity to the grid when it’s vulnerable to blackouts. Working together, the Powerwalls create a “virtual power plant” that can help keep the lights on during emergencies or energy shortages.

They’ll pay Powerwall owners to participate.

That’ll likely require a new generation of DAC plants, each capable of taking in 1 million metric tons of CO2 per year. So in the grand scheme of things, Mammoth — with the capacity to capture 36,000 tons of CO2 a year — isn’t quite so mammoth. Even so, Mammoth is an important test case for scaling up Direct Air Capture tech.

It’ll capture nine times as much CO2 as its predecessor.

Microsoft says its data centers could soon provide backup power to electric grids transitioning to renewable energy. The data centers already have lithium-ion batteries on-site so that they can keep running during a power outage. Now, that backup system could also shore up grids in need of more batteries to store energy produced by growing numbers of solar panels or wind farms.

It’s trying the concept out in Dublin.

People have talked about mining the deep sea for minerals for decades, and that future is almost here. Driven by a need for more of the minerals used in everyday gadgets and batteries, the first efforts to raid polymetallic nodules at the bottom of the ocean for these resources could begin in earnest as soon as next year. The noise from those operations could affect marine life even hundreds of kilometers away, the authors of the new paper found.

A payload making its way to the International Space Station could help researchers back on Earth finally solve a climate mystery that’s stymied scientists for years. NASA launched a key instrument for its climate research, called the Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT), aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft Thursday night from the Kennedy Space Center.

Gran Turismo’s PlayStation 4 debut will have to wait a little while longer. Sony has announced that Gran Turismo Sport — which was originally slated to launch on the PS4 in November, with additional support for PlayStation VR — has been delayed until 2017.

“As we approach our planned release date in November, we realize we need more time to perfect GT Sport, which we’ve already dedicated so much effort towards since announcing the title,” explained Kazunori Yamauchi, founder of GT studio Polyphony Digital. “We do not want to compromise the experience in any way.”

Bose is ready to reenter the competitive true wireless earbuds market with two new products. Today, the company is announcing both the noise-canceling QuietComfort Earbuds, priced at $279, and the $179 Sports Earbuds. (They were previously known as the Noise Canceling Earbuds 700 and 500, respectively.) With the flagship QuietComfort Earbuds, Bose is promising to deliver “all the ‘quiet’ of Bose around-ear headphones” in a truly wireless form factor. As for the Sports Earbuds, essentially a successor to 2017’s SoundSport Free, Bose says they’re designed for comfort and stability through even the most vigorous, intense workouts. Both will be available on September 29th, with preorders starting today.

Beyond that, the Chiron Sport also has a new handling package that includes revised steering and suspension systems that sharpen the car’s responses when in the aggressive Handling mode. This means the Chiron Sport is likely to match the standard car’s ability to be quiet and comfortable when you’re not on a race track — as we found when we drove it last year on a public road — and at speeds when you can enjoy the beautifully crafted interior and appreciate the way it’s built. Yet, because of the stiffer settings available when you need them, Bugatti says the Sport completes the Nardo Ring in Italy five seconds quicker than the standard Chiron.
