Wait… did you just TEAR that beautiful tartan?!

Yes, you saw that right! During our October Kiltmaking Workshop, we're teaching our students one of the traditional techniques used in preparing tartan fabric for a Scottish kilt: tearing the fabric!

It might seem a little frightening to deliberately tear such beautiful wool tartan, but there's a reason behind it. When suitable fabric is torn carefully along the grain, it helps create a straight edge that follows the weave of the cloth and reduces tear and wear.

It's one of those fascinating techniques that surprises students when they first discover the art of traditional kiltmaking. And yes… that first tear can be a little nerve-racking! 😉

Traditional craftsmanship is about understanding your materials, not just knowing how to sew.
Every stage has its purpose, and every technique is part of the knowledge we love passing on.

The pleats are nearly finished, what started as a beautiful length of tartan wool is slowly transforming into a traditional Scottish kilt.

It takes patience, precision and quite a few hours of dedicated work. But seeing those perfectly aligned pleats come together makes it all worthwhile!

Every pleat tells a story and every kilt begins with patience.
One of the most beautiful stages of traditional kiltmaking is the pleating.

During our Kiltmaking Workshop our students are learning how to carefully measure, draw and shape the tartan into the pleats that give a traditional Scottish kilt its distinctive character.

It may look simple, but behind every perfectly aligned pleat are hours of concentration, precision and skill.

And seeing our students discover these traditional techniques is exactly why we love teaching this wonderful craft. Here's a little glimpse of the pleating process in our studio!

A new workshop, learning new skills!

On the 16th of October, we welcomed our students into The Kiltmaker's Studio for the start of our traditional Kiltmaking Workshop. Over the coming days, our students will discover the beautiful art of creating a traditional hand-sewn Scottish kilt.

For us, teaching kiltmaking is about more than making a garment. It's about passing on knowledge, preserving centuries-old traditions and ensuring that this wonderful craftsmanship continues for generations to come.

We cannot wait to see the beautiful kilts our students will create!

A little glimpse of the Allée Interceltique at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient.

Music, tartans, craftsmanship and thousands of people celebrating Celtic culture together. It’s an atmosphere that’s difficult to put into words you simply have to experience it.

We’re grateful to be part of this incredible festival! ⭐️

Day 6 at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient… and the atmosphere is incredible.

From bagpipes to tartan, every day reminds us why this heritage matters.

Our stand has welcomed visitors from all over the world sharing stories, tartans and the craft of kiltmaking.

We’ve brought bespoke kilts, ladies kilts, authentic tartan fabrics, Heritage Craft Bundles, bookmarks, gift bags and Celtic kiltpins.

If you’re in Lorient, come and say hello! We’d love to meet you.
