PROPOSAL TO THE GOVERNMENT OF GHANA
Request for Sponsorship: Establishment of a Sustainable Menstrual Hygiene Manufacturing Facility
Submitted by: FaaKo
⸻
1. Executive Summary
This proposal seeks strategic partnership and sponsorship from the Government of Ghana to establish a local manufacturing facility dedicated to producing washable menstrual pads and solar-powered portable mini washing machines. The initiative aims to address menstrual hygiene challenges, reduce environmental pollution caused by single-use sanitary products, create employment opportunities, and position Ghana as a leader in sustainable hygiene solutions across Africa and global markets.
⸻
2. Background and Problem Statement
Menstrual hygiene remains a critical issue affecting millions of women and girls in Ghana and across Africa. Many rely on disposable sanitary pads, which:
• Are costly over time for low-income households
• Generate significant non-biodegradable waste
• Are often improperly disposed of, leading to environmental pollution and public health risks
Additionally, limited access to proper washing facilities creates barriers to adopting reusable alternatives, especially in rural and underserved communities.
⸻
3. Proposed Solution
We propose the establishment of an integrated manufacturing and innovation hub that will produce:
A. Washable Menstrual Pads
• High-quality, affordable, reusable for up to 2–3 years
• Made from safe, locally sourced, eco-friendly materials
• Designed for comfort, durability, and cultural acceptability
B. Solar-Powered Portable Mini Washing Machines
• Compact and easy to use in low-resource settings
• Powered by renewable solar energy
• Designed specifically for hygienic washing of reusable pads
• Water-efficient and suitable for off-grid communities
⸻
4. Economic and Employment Impact
This initiative will contribute directly to Ghana’s economic growth through:
• Job Creation:
• Manufacturing and production roles
• Engineering and technical positions
• Sales, distribution, and logistics jobs
• Research and product development roles
• Skills Development:
Training programs in green manufacturing, renewable energy systems, and product assembly
• Support for Local Industries:
Sourcing raw materials locally where possible to stimulate domestic supply chains
⸻
5. Environmental Benefits
The project aligns strongly with Ghana’s environmental sustainability goals:
• Reduction in plastic and non-biodegradable waste
• Decreased burden on waste management systems
• Promotion of circular economy practices
• Use of renewable solar energy to minimize carbon emissions
By replacing single-use menstrual products with reusable alternatives, this initiative directly contributes to protecting Ghana’s ecosystems and public spaces.
⸻
6. Export Potential and Regional Leadership
Ghana has a strategic opportunity to become a regional manufacturing hub for sustainable menstrual hygiene products:
• Export to ECOWAS countries and wider African markets
• Expand into global markets focused on eco-friendly products
• Strengthen Ghana’s reputation as a leader in green innovation
• Generate foreign exchange revenue
⸻
7. Request for Government Support
We respectfully seek the Government’s support in the following areas:
• Financial Sponsorship / Seed Funding to establish the manufacturing facility
• Tax Incentives and Import Duty Waivers for machinery and raw materials
• Land Allocation or Industrial Space for the factory setup
• Policy Support to promote reusable menstrual products in public health programs
• Partnership with Ministries (Health, Environment, Trade, Gender) for scaling impact
⸻
8. Implementation Plan (Overview)
Phase 1: Feasibility study, design, and partnerships
Phase 2: Facility setup and pilot production
Phase 3: Market launch within Ghana
Phase 4: Regional export expansion
⸻
9. Conclusion
This initiative presents a unique opportunity to simultaneously address public health, environmental sustainability, economic development, and gender equity.
By supporting this project, the Government of Ghana will not only improve the lives of millions of women and girls but also take a bold step toward a cleaner environment and a stronger, more inclusive economy.
We welcome the opportunity to discuss this proposal further and explore how we can collaborate to bring this vision to life.
