Some friendships take the scenic route…
Marjolaine and I first met at nursery school. We lost touch, then unexpectedly met again at twenty, when a friend recognised her as I was getting on a bus. Marjolaine is not exactly a name you forget…
Over the years, our paths occasionally crossed through mutual friends. The gallery representing Marjolaine and Louis was also just around the corner from my former shop, so she would sometimes visit the boutique and became one of my clients.
Then one day, in the metro, I noticed a woman’s dress and thought, “I like that dress.” I looked at her face and realised it was Marjolaine, wearing one of my WOWO dresses. Even funnier, I was wearing the same dress in a different print. Of course, we took a selfie.
That was when we decided we really had to spend some proper time together, so I invited her to visit me this summer.
Marjolaine and her husband, Louis Bachelot, form the artistic duo Bachelot Caron. They moved to Burgundy around thirty years ago and have developed a singular world infused with a contemporary baroque spirit. After working for many years with painting and images, they now create extraordinary ceramic sculptures.
When I began looking for a house in Burgundy, I naturally called her. The first house I wanted to visit was just a few minutes from theirs, but it had already been sold. Life eventually brought me to the area anyway.
And this summer, she finally came to see me. We talked, laughed and had such a lovely time.
A friendship with a very long preface, and perhaps a new chapter beginning.
