Tool — A series dedicated to the tools of our Venetian workshop. Each edition focuses on one object, one step, one gesture that goes into making a Tricot piece. What the craftsman’s hand knows by heart, and what no one ever sees.
 
Tool N°03 — The Thread Cutter
A standard pair of scissors cuts lengthwise: it pulls slightly on the fabric, and does not always reach as close as it should. On cashmere, on knit, that millimeter matters.

The thread cutter is built for this gesture. 105 millimeters. Two fine, sharp points. A light, maneuverable tool, designed for the places a wider blade cannot reach. The tips slip under the thread without catching the fabric. The cut is clean, close, with no fraying. Leather, fabric, knit: the same precision, the same gesture.

In the hands of a Venetian artisan, this gesture is repeated dozens of times per piece. These are the finishes that give Tricot seams their clean edge.

She named a series of ceramics after a garment. The Kimono: objects designed to dress space.

Emmanuelle Roule, artistic director, designer and ceramicist, works with clay in a former farmhouse in Marseille. A hybrid studio, also a place for residencies, dinners and workshops.

Since 2012, she has moved toward unglazed surfaces, the naturally toxic part, for a rawer form with an environmental dimension.

If a friend had to introduce you, what would she say first?
— They’d probably say I’m a loyal friend, a good listener, always up for anything, through the best and the worst.

Who catches your eye in a crowd?
— People who smile, and laugh out loud.

What’s the first thing you do when you get home at night?
— Walking my dog in the woods, my quiet moment of the day.

The best advice you’ve ever been given?
— I’ve always been told karma never forgets, so I’d rather sow the good kind.

The last 3 times you wore your Tricot?
— On a photoshoot, in the kitchen in my ultra-cosy zip-neck sweater, and (soon) in Japan in my new pink cardigan.

TRICOT STORY w/ Pierre-Elie de Pibrac
French photographer and visual artist, born in Paris in 1983.

Pierre-Elie lives in a country for 8 months before photographing its people. With Olivia, his wife with whom he works, and their three children.

As a family, they travel more than 20,000 kilometers across each country: Japan, Cuba, and Israel. An anthropological trilogy in progress.

In the laboratory, fifteen years of four-handed work with Thomas Consani Silver prints. The red light. The paper in the bath. The image appearing slowly. At the end of each project, a book.

— I actually asked my best friend this, and she said I’m poised, warm, but mysterious at the same time.

Who catches your eye in a crowd?
— Eye contact. There’s something honest about it; you can feel someone’s energy in a second.

What’s the first thing you do when you get home at night?
— I take off my shoes, put on some music, and have a cigarette.

The best advice you’ve ever been given?
— Not to change who I am to fit in anywhere. The right people will always find you.

The last 3 times you wore your Tricot?
— I just came back from Barcelona, and it was the only sweater I brought, so I ended up wearing it
every day for three days. It was fun styling it differently each time.
