FEMME FEMME PARIS loves art: Henri Matisse, Dance (I), 1909, Oil on canvas, 260 x 390 cm, Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Henri Matisse, 1869-1954, is regarded as the most influential painter of the Fauvist movement. He used color as a tool throughout his whole career, from oil painting to his late cut-out works, to express his feelings about a subject, instead of describing what it objectively looks like. Wealthy Russian industrialist and collector of French modern art, Sergey Shchukin, commissioned Matisse in 1909 to paint multiple large scale canvases to decorate his Moscow mansion. Matisse subsequently executed Dance and its pendant painting Music in only four colors. Both works are icons of modern art and are now in the collection of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. The monumental canvas Dance I is a preparatory painting for Dance. Although Matisse made adjustments to the composition and the figures are more defined and suggest more physical strength in the final version, the sense of movement and joy is already present in this first sketch. The modeling of the dancers is subordinate to Matisse’s colorful palette and his use of broad brushstrokes. Although Dance I was seen by critics as just a preparatory painting for Dance for a long time, it is now rightfully praised because of its own artistic qualities.
