George Hoyningen-Huene was born on this day in 1900 ✨ And we are marking the day by reading the spectacular new book ‘This is Photography’ edited by Nathalie Herschdorfer
It is the ultimate guide to the magic and mystery of photography, featuring the landmark photographs, inventions, innovations, exhibitions and publications that changed the way we see the world.
From Eadweard Muybridge, Man Ray and Hoyningen-Huene, to Zanele Muholi, Cindy Sherman and Barbara Kruger, it celebrates photographs from leading image-makers, presented chronologically alongside key objects and developments.
The book features an essay by on Hoyningen-Huene’s iconic 1929 portrait of Josephine Baker for Vanity Fair.

‘This is Photography’ is published worldwide from 27 August 2026.

Horst P. Horst (1906-1999) met George Hoyningen-Huene in Paris in 1930 and was photographed by Huene many times. This picture of Horst in his German lederhosen was taken in 1931.
They were lovers in the 1930s and lifelong friends. Huene taught Horst everything he knew about photography and Horst became one of Vogue’s star photographers himself, enjoying a career that spanned six decades.
