This was the first couture dress I ever created. In my final year of design school at FIDM, I was selected as one of the top students to create a dress inspired by Vivienne Westwood to compliment her exhibition at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. I was never a huge fan of her punk-rock aesthetic but I loved her unconventional approach to fashion (and life) and how she became a trailblazer by breaking rules and creating “imperfect” clothes that challenged the status quo.

So taking a page from the rebel Queen, I shunned any precise pattern pieces and made this dress out of an entire piece of leftover fabric without making any cuts, without wasting any fabric, randomly stitched folds together and left the edges completely raw. Basically everything we were taught not to do.

It was a beautiful mess made in the scrappiest of ways. Just like the diva herself. I hope she would’ve been proud.
