ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT
Jehezekiel “Jez” Tekii
Forge & Field Rugby | Forward Department
Some athletes wait to be told what to do. Jez listens, applies the lesson, and keeps improving long after training ends.
I first met Jez earlier this year while away with the CQ Bushrangers U16s, and his coachability stood out immediately. He was attentive, receptive to feedback, and willing to put instruction into action, clear signs of a young athlete driven about reaching his potential.
What impressed me most was learning that Jez keeps his own player journal and diary. At just 16, he is already showing the self-discipline and ambition to take ownership of his rugby journey.
Currently representing The Rockhampton Grammar School & Frenchville Sports Club , Jez is a versatile forward who plays across the back row and second row. With five years of rugby experience and several representative opportunities behind him, he is building a strong foundation.
But what really caught my attention wasn't his résumé. It was his mindset.
When I asked about his aspirations, his answer was simple:
"To play for the All Blacks or Australia one day."
When I asked why, his response wasn't about fame or recognition. It was about providing for his family, his love of rugby, and inspiring other kids to chase their dreams.
His idol is God,Jesus, and his favourite rugby player is Ardie Savea.
One question, however, stood out. I asked Jez:
"Imagine you've made it. You're a professional rugby player representing the All Blacks. What message would you send back to your younger self?"
His response was powerful:
"Don't let others talk you down. Block out the outside noise. Do what you do and build on it. Other people's opinions don't matter as much as your own. Your biggest enemy is yourself."
For a 16-year-old athlete, that's a remarkable perspective.
I also respect that Jez doesn't pretend to have everything figured out. He recognises the areas of his game that need improvement.
His immediate goal is to earn an opportunity within a rugby academy. His ultimate goal is professional rugby.
Blessed to forge a path on the field for Jez & passionate to watch him succeed.
