'How to Catch a Star' by Oliver Jeffers through sight, sound, smell, touch and taste.

Who had these glow-in-the-dark stars stuck to their bedroom ceiling in the 90s?!

We’re using them as part of 'How to Catch a Star' by Oliver Jeffers this week.

The lights are off, the stars are stuck on the wall, and the children are shining their torches to make them glow.

Along with the oohs and aahs from all ages, here’s some of the learning that might be happening…

For our younger children
👀✋ Accurately aiming the torch at specific stars builds grip strength and hand-eye coordination.

For our older children
🧠 Observation, curiosity and prediction, wondering and discovering:
“What happens if I hold the light on it for longer?”
“What happens if I shine the light closer?”

For our oldest children
🔬 It gives a lovely real-life way to introduce how light and energy work — the stars absorb the light and then slowly release it as a glow (the scientific term is phosphorescence).

Such simple resources, yet so much wonder ✨

Our Wild Story 🌿

In February 2026, I (Stevie from Sense-a-Story ) wanted to create a special session based on the much-loved book The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Because the story is so well known and cherished, I knew the experience had to match its magic, so I asked Paloma The Wild Project) if we could bring it to life in the “Deep Dark Woods”. She said yes!

It was only ever meant to be a one-off special event for children and their families… yet we ended up running seven sessions because so many of you wanted to come and experience it!

But it didn’t end there...

As we tidied up the forest afterwards (usually with a cup of chai tea in hand), we found ourselves brainstorming more stories, more meaningful activities, and more magical experiences. And just like that, Wild Stories Collective was born.

We also wrote two brand-new songs — “Hello Wild Friends” and “Goodbye from the Forest” — and three original stories of our own to bring to life beneath the trees.

We’re both creative people on our own, but together we seem to bounce off each other and draw out even more creativity. With our combined knowledge of the early years, primary education, outdoor learning, sensory development, play, and children’s literature, something special has taken root.

The stars, the stories, and the wild seem to have aligned and brought us together.

We are so very grateful for the love, support, and excitement you’ve shown for Wild Stories Collective so far.

We can’t wait to welcome you to the woods for more wild stories and magical adventures.

Ahead of the first telling of our debut Wild Stories Collective original story - The Forest Fairy, we wanted to share something special with you.

We may be good at telling and writing stories, but our illustration skills don't quite match!

So we asked Stevie's stepdaughter Sophie if she would illustrate our story.

Sessions start the week beginning 17th August.
