During the Victorian era, men commonly used wax to style their moustaches, but hot tea or coffee would often melt it, causing it to drip into the drink or stain the facial hair. To address this issue, British potter Harvey Adams introduced the moustache cup in the 1860s.

These cups were designed with a small internal ledge and a narrow opening that shielded the moustache while still allowing liquid to pass through. The practical invention quickly gained popularity across Europe before eventually falling out of everyday use.
