CALLING ON ALL DAYCARE AND NURSERY SETTINGS:

Helping reduce the average potty training age in toddlers is something we are very passionate about. Over the last few decades the average potty training age has increased gradually. It is now around 3 years old.

With only 95% of children fully potty trained before starting school and 1.5 million children in the UK currently living with a bladder or bowel condition.

Research has shown that the best age to potty train is between 18 months and 2.5 years. So how can we get back to potty training sooner.

Having spent the last 9 months working with a nursery group that has actively tackled potty training in their settings, it can be done. They have successfully reduced the average nappy free age in their settings by 8 months already. This means they have reduced their costs, waste created and freed up staff time. These children will also be "school ready" and have better health outcomes.

We want to replicate this and work with other nurseries to achieve the same results.

Lets talk potty training !
There is a lot of talk recently regarding the right age to potty train, and issues with school age children still in nappies. So when is it best to start.
Eric - The Childrens Bowel and Bladder Charity - states that the best age to potty train is between 18 months and 30 months for good bladder health.
Some say "wait for signs" but what is your little ones shows no signs - do you wait? Habits start to form from approx 2 years so the longer you wait the more of a challenge moving on from nappies can be as toddlers resist change.
Our advice is:
At 18 months or even earlier introduce a potty to your little one. Get them used to sitting on it. Perhaps each morning before dressing and at bathtime. Tell your little one what the potty is for and encourage them to try and p*e or p**p into it with no expectation to begin with. Do not leave them sitting on the potty for more than a 2-5 minutes.
Moving on, get your little one to sit on the potty before putting on a clean nappy. Or start some nappy free time for a couple of hours a day and extend with any success. Encourge your little one to go to the potty to use it (preferable than expecting them to come and ask you to use it) even if that means removing a nappy to do so.
Start a potty routine. i.e. before dressing, before/after a meal, before/after going out, nap time, bathtime and bedtime. This will decrease accidents and give your toddler a habit forming routine to go forward with.
Praise every success. Be Calm when there is an accident. Be consistant with your approach. Do not dip in and out as this causes confusion. Don't forget to tell your little one regulalry what you want them to do. They do not know so they need your help.
