We grew up with nothing. I distinctly remember us building our own dirt track, and spending months in a car park building and then skating our own flat bank made of discarded wooden shipping pallets. Both of these self-made environments supplied us with endless hours of fun. As I grew older, I discovered the punk and hip-hop scenes, and began to appreciate – and identify with – their DIY attitudes
. They had the same attitude as us: if you want it that bad, then you do it yourself. Build your scene from scratch. I may now be older, but I still draw huge enjoyment from BMXing, skateboarding, punk rock and hip-hop. And I'm still fully of the belief that these parallel schools of thought have a point. If you want it that bad, then you do it yourself.
