This is third kilt I have made. This one is for my son’s girlfriend. It is mostly hand stitched to traditional methods, but I did put in a quirky lining. The tacking still has to come out of the pleats. It will get a final press when it arrives in Australia. Hopefully it doesn’t go astray on the journey.

I have been working through my stash of fabrics during lockdown. Here are the special occasion dresses I designed and made. I had LHS (lockdown hair syndrome) when these were taken. The fabric for the top one and the pink dress was purchased in China, the dark blue dress fabric was purchased in Milan and the overlay in India.

No Christmas shopping this year so I made Mike his pressies. I designed both garments and made the patterns. They were a surprise so I wasn’t able to fit them. The T shirt is a bit bolder than Mike would usually wear. I was very sparing with the bright pink on the sweatshirt. There is a wee secret pocket in the T shirt. I bought the T shirt fabric from Mandors and the navy sweatshirt neoprene scuba was from Edinburgh Fabrics. Both shops are helpful in phone discussions and sending out samples as well as sending fabric and haberdashery.

Jetted pockets at the back of the trousers and inside jacket Hayley McDonald, I forgot to take a picture of them.

I wouldn’t want to be without my unpicker. I was very pleased with the pocket I had sewn until I turned it over.

This week’s lockdown make. I have had the fabric a couple of years. I used the bodice of a dress pattern given to me, thank you Susan Crosby. I had already altered the pattern to get a good fit on the bodice. I altered the sleeve pattern and made the pattern for the trouser bit. After lockdown, I can give one to one lessons on pattern making or changing patterns to make your own design if there is demand.

HND is now complete and passed with an ‘A’. My alterations ‘in tray’ is empty so here are this weeks’ makes for myself. The dress was made with the last pattern I bought. It was strange in that it had a lined bodice with boning as well as a lined back, a lined front skirt and a wrap over front, so loads of layers lucky I have a machine which can chug through everything. The lining and fabric is all jersey fabric. I had enough left over for half a T shirt which goes well with fabric I got in Helsinki. The dress is for Christmas and the T shirt for the summer holiday. Anticipating an unlock for both.

Have been busy as usual with alterations, hemming and making one lady’s wardrobe smaller as she has been successfully slimming. I have been making a wedding dress and altering bridesmaids dresses. Here is a dress I made for a 1920s module at college. We had to use traditional methods such as binding seam allowances. The embroidery and beading is hand done. Altogether a more leisurely age!
