HELIKON FOSSILS, 2026
earth, clay, wood, rock, pewter & reclaimed glass crystals

These synthetic fossils are relics from the Molt Residency at Helikon Art Center in the year 2026. Paraphernalia from the unique space has been cast in metal, preserved and presented as artefact. Each symbolic object has been foraged and tells a history of the people that occupy this site, evoking collective memory. Pewter replicas of the original objects are embedded within natural materials that are significant to Helikon Art Center, appearing as though discovered in the earth in a faraway future. These works are deeply rooted in place and time, acting as tangible remnants of the present.

All the rings created in my RELIC workshop for a cohort of artists at earlier this year 💍💍💍

The rings feature impressions taken from the landscape, architecture and found objects at Morecambe Bay. Being so close to the beach we had an abundance of material to forage and textures were created from sea plants, tech, flowers, sand, discarded items and the building itself.

Cast in silver these impressions are preserved and serve as a tangible connection to place.

What I created on my recent Artist Residency

Helikon Art Center is a treasure trove, as someone who works with found object I was in heaven here. Rummaging through rooms and outdoor spaces I found endless materials to work with, things that tell stories and carry signs of age, that have been touched by many hands over the years and used by artists that come and go. The work I created here preserved the material culture that is intrinsic to Helikon, and was presented as artefact in our exhibition at the end of the MOLT residency.

My plan before arriving at the residency was to combine my existing practice of metalwork with other materials to form sculptures. I played with clay and earth, and dipped my toes into woodwork, learning new skills and techniques along the way. I achieved what I set out to do to during this time, creating four final sculptures, however, I could have quite happily stayed here for longer as I was totally in my element; foraging, making, exploring, drawing , carving and casting.

(I also had a few side quests, including making a piece of jewellery for a birthday gift as I simply couldn’t resist!)

I’m back from two and a half weeks of living in a weird & wonderful paradise in the Turkish countryside with a beautiful bunch of strangers for my first ever artist residency. I will share what I created during my time at Helikon in another post because firstly, I have far too many pics to narrow it down to twenty, and secondly, what I made was not the most important thing about this experience.

Though I deeply enjoyed having time to create and playing with new materials, connecting with other artists from around the world and learning about their practice / stories is what I cherish most from this time. Besides, it was magical to pick fresh fruit from the trees, to live in a dollhouse, being in the forest at midnight, sending handwritten letters, exploring abandoned buildings, getting licked by a cow and dancing around the fire.

Super excited to say that I am going on my first ever artist residency in September at Helikon Art Center

It’s such a rarity as a working-class artist to have extended time to spend on my practice, I am really looking forward to this experience and seeing what comes up and what I create whilst I’m there.

Planning to be mostly offline and enjoy the Turkish village life, but will definitely be sharing pics of the adventure when I’m back in the UK!

💍 The process of finishing a batch of rings from a workshop:

1. Begin with the rings created in wax during the workshop
2. I add a little piece of wax called a sprue to every ring for casting
3. Rings are sent to be cast into recycled sterling silver
4. How the rings look when they come back to me
5. A little spin in the tumbler removes anything leftover from casting
6. I remove all the excess metal first by sawing, then filing
7. You’ll never know it was there!
8. Some rings need heating up to be resized
9. Then they look like this, in need of a polish!
10. Part way through polishing, it’s a long process
11. One last spin in the tumbler to get into all the nooks & crannies
12. Each ring is packaged up
13. All the rings ready to be reunited with their makers
14. Write a thank you note

It was lovely to be back teaching a Ring Making Workshop for another cohort of artists at 💍

The artists created wearable Relics from the Morecambe Bay Area. Utilising found objects, the natural landscape and architectural features we created imprints in wax. Being so close to the beach we had an abundance of material to forage and textures were created from sea plants, tech, flowers, sand, discarded items and the building itself.

Once cast into metal these impressions will be preserved and serve as a reminder of place. Stay tuned to see the finished rings in recycled silver ✨

A traditional Wax-Carving Worksop held at .village (on one of the sweatiest days ever!)

Despite the heat it was so nice to be back teaching in my favourite space on the Wirral, we spent a lovely evening slowly carving with hand tools to reach our final ring designs.
