It's a Good News Week here!

We're thrilled to announce that PeaceGold has been shortlisted for TWO Professional Jeweller Awards: Community Initiative of the Year and Responsible Jewellery Business of the Year!

From transforming gold into a source of peace and prosperity in the Democratic Republic of Congo to bringing responsible jewellery and skills training to the UK high street, this nod recognises over a decade of work building a community of conscience that spans two continents.

🎉 A landmark moment for PeaceGold! 🎉

After more than a decade of work by Greg Valerio and the PeaceGold team - building trust with mining cooperatives, eliminating mercury from gold processing, laying the legal groundwork for compliant exports and establishing a circular economy which returns value to the people producing gold - we've reached a major milestone.

PeaceGold has this week signed a long-term partnership with SigraFi, UK-based responsible gold sourcing experts, bringing fair financing and reliable market access to artisanal mining cooperatives in Ituri Province, DRC.

In practice, this means that traceable, conflict-free gold from these cooperatives can now begin moving through compliant international refining channels - bringing us closer to the day when jewellery designers and makers here in the UK and Europe can source PeaceGold gold directly.

This a monumental step forward for the communities we work alongside. Incredibly grateful to the SigraFi team for their partnership and belief in this work.

In Bishop Auckland - a proud former coal and iron town in the heart of County Durham, undergoing significant regeneration - PeaceGold has laid the roots for our UK community presence. The Ethical Jewellery House at Fore Bondgate is an education, retail, café, goldsmithing and community event space. Our decision to locate here was deliberate: to anchor our organisation in a real community.

Central to our community offer is a programme of regular jewellery-making courses led by our resident goldsmith and educator Kate Seow, whose teaching connects participants not only to craft skills but to the deeper story of ethical gold. Numbers are capped at six per session; accessible pricing covers all tools, materials and refreshments, minimising barriers to participation.

PeaceGold is partly supported by a peacebuilding organisations in the Democratic Republic of Congo called the Centre Resolution Conflits (CRC). CRC focuses on conflict resolution, disarming militias, rehabilitating child soldiers and community reconciliation.

Through collaboration with PeaceGold and UK-based organisation Peace Direct, CRC accompanies artisanal and small-scale mines in Ituri to improve working standards. Through our work to date, the mines have been able to achieve the necessary protections of labour and human rights to access international standards for legal gold production and sales, all whilst supporting local community development and wellbeing.

Cooperative members like S have been integral to PeaceGold’s journey towards sustainable peace in and around the mines.

That was fun!

Sending an enormous thank you to master craftsman Russell Lownsbrough for joining us at the PeaceGold Ethical Jewellery House over the weekend to share his leading knowledge on the art of wax-carving. Of course, there is no masterclass without willing students - so huge thanks are also in order for those who joined us to learn from the best and fill our community hub with your curious energy!
