Another day, another hardcore band that comes out as problematic, this time with transphobic comments. I'm so disappointed and saddened with releasing a positive statement explaining themselves and apologising yesterday, but back to posting today like nothing happened. The same with the announced support band & promoters saying absolutely nothing in the entirety of this. It's very easy to say you're an ally for minorities onstage, but when it comes to stepping up and taking actual action, nothing is done and everyone falls silent.
It's also very easy to not be an as***le and let people live their lives; to not mock a cohort of people who are already being demonised by the press & ridiculed by the Government for simply trying to exist. How did it get to the point where hardcore and punk became so elitist and continues to be gatekept by men, thinking this behaviour is okay in 2024?
My advice? Get more women, non-binary and trans punks on hardcore bills, in your crew, in the crowd. It's time to open the scene up; the bands are out there, promoters - do your job. It's time hardcore became a safe space FOR EVERYONE. So many people don't go to these shows because they know it simply isn't safe for them and with nothing being done about it, are we surprised?
As for the venues who did cancel their CMI UK shows, said something and took a stand, thank you. For CMI who are back to posting like business as usual, I hope you actually make a change and it wasn't just all talk, no trousers. For the support bands & promoters who have said nothing so you can stay being on a major tour, your silence has been noted and won't be forgotten.
I hope I will eat my words and see CMI and the other bands on the bill actually do something, but I won't be holding my breath. Nothing changes if nothing changes.
PUNKS AGAINST PREJUDICE ALWAYS.
