Did you know… Saunton Sands beach was used by American troops to train for D-Day when they were stationed in Braunton in the mid 1940s. The beach no longer has any evidence of this, but the remains of concrete bunkers and other training aids are still visible on the Braunton Burrows. Also The beach was used as a location for the Second World War Anzio landings scenes in the 1982 Pink Floyd film The Wall and as the backdrop for over 700 wrought iron hospital beds on the cover of the band’s 1987 album A Momentary Lapse of Reason.

With the first month of this new year coming to a close, I just wanted to look back and reflect on how blessed we’ve been with the amazing ground swells here in beautiful North Devon. Life is a gift please use it, get out there, tell loved ones you love them, share it, give to others, be positive, smile, care, most of all live everyday as it’s your last! Get a board go surfing, it’s the most beautiful feeling, I promise you you’ll never look back! The lost a member of our beautiful Sunday trading family this week. Many of you will have purchased a driftwood surf picture from John Tull a gentlemen and all-round nice guy, he will be sadly missed by all at the Croyde Sunday Market. John had a massive passion for ridding waves and taking epic surf pictures, god bless you John 🙌🏽💙

Matt Johnson:
You know, Mrs. Barlow, there’s something I’d like to straighten out.

Mrs. Barlow:
What’s that, Matt?

Matt Johnson:
Well, I did a lot of things around here I’m kind of ashamed of. I tore up your lawn with my ‘40 Ford...

Mrs. Barlow:
Many times.

Matt Johnson:
Took my pants off in front of your friends...

Mrs. Barlow:
Oh, yes.

Matt Johnson:
And I even passed out in your closet, but I never, and I don’t know who could have if I didn’t, but I never, and I repeat never, ever pi**ed in your steam iron.

Stoked to be asked if I’d test ride / help develop another one of Marks new boards. If this rides half as good as Marks other paipo boards it will fly! More than three centuries ago, only those on the top of the social hierarchy could ride waves. It was a privilege of a chosen few.
The community chiefs had the best boards and the best waves just for themselves.
In the 18th century, according to the book "Hawaiian Surfing: Traditions From the Past," the local wave masters rode four types of surfboards (papa he'e nalu): papa li'ili'i, papa olo, papa alaia, and papa kiko'o.
The smallest board models were the papa li'ili'i (small boards). They were between three and six feet tall, 16 inches wide, and half-inch thick.
However, "during the late 1800s, the popularity of surfing among Hawaiians declined considerably"

"The introduction of new religions, new diseases, new economy, new forms of government, and new interests took Hawaiians in many different directions."
