This chatelaine features a variety of tools hung on chains from an ornate belt clip.

Chatelaines were wildly popular in the mid to late 1800s. They were intented to be hung from a woman’s waist and were intended to be both decorative and practical.

This chatelaine dates to ca.1863-1885 and features scissors, a scent bottle, small cases, thimble bucket, needle case, pinkeep, cigar cutter, paper knife (letter opener), small writing tablet for taking notes, and a small magnifier.

The chatelaine is made from cut steel. This would have been an affordable object as chatelaines were also made from sterling silver and gold. The chatelaine has brightly polished rivets, their ends faceted to imitate diamonds.

This piece is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum at https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O73185/chatelaine/

In November of 2012 Live Auctioneers sold this quite unusual evening dress from the 1930s. The sleeveless cream silk evening dress is embroidered in black with tiny flower heads scattered over the skirt and matching chiffon stole. Apart from the surviving maker label within the dress it is the manner of the embroidery, particularly the embroidered darts in the lower skirt that give a real hint as to the designer, Jeanne Lanvin. Her work often had a strong geometry to it, and just as often relied on decorative motifs of a decidedly ancient feel to them. Just as wonderful today as it was when it was first completed.
