We love our August walks and if we’re taking the dogs, we usually go first thing or in the evening. The air is cooler, the paths quieter and we can let the dogs lead the way, just hopefully not in two different directions.

Heat, haze and holiday walks. It’s peak summer now — warm air, fantastic views and slow exploring.

July is the month for easy days out — swims, shaded walks, long afternoons that turn into evenings. Here’s what earns a place in the Duffel Bag when the temperature climbs.

• Waxed Cotton Cap — keeps the sun off, handles sudden downpours
• Sunscreen — high factor, small bottle, lives in the side pocket
• Sunglasses — something you won’t mind getting sandy or muddy
• Reusable water bottle — cold water is non negotiable in a heatwave
• Light snacks — oat bars, fruit, nuts; things that won’t melt in the heat
• Towel or microfibre cloth — for river dips, lake swims, or wiping down after a hot walk
• Lightweight layer — the Trail ¼ Zip if you’re out early or staying late
• Plasters — for long miles in warm weather
• Dog bags — if you’ve got a four legged companion
• Charged phone — for maps, photos, and the “where shall we go next” moment
• A small waterproof pouch — for keys, wallet, and anything you don’t want getting damp

JULY FIELD NOTES – read our latest Journal on the Muddy Meadow website.

July is made for simple plans — swims, shaded walks, long afternoons that turn into evenings.

It’s the time of year when you pack a few essentials and head out without much of a plan.

The Duffel Bag earns its place here: big enough for towels, snacks, a spare layer, and all the bits you end up taking “just in case”

The Waxed Cotton Cap is the one product we reach for a lot in summer.

Built for hot days, it keeps the sun off your face and holds its own when a summer downpour rolls through.

A small thing that makes a big difference when the heat is high.
