Congratulations to gorgeous bride Chris and her husband Ed on their recent wedding. Chris wore a beautiful vintage 1950s wedding dress that needed some TLC to get it wedding perfect. I repaired a tear to the sleeve of the delicate flocked organdie fabric and added some internal corsetry to support the bodice. Some seams were also restitched to strengthen them and the dress was then ready for its big day! A joy to work on this timeless exquisite dress. 👗🧵❤️

Now that face coverings are mandatory in enclosed public spaces in England, you might want to consider having a few reusable ones to keep in your everyday bag/rucksack, in the car and spare ones for when the others are in the wash.

I make washable face coverings to order which are made in dual layered 100% cotton, with adjustable nose clip, filter pocket (no filter included) and adjustable elastic ear loops. These cost £12 each, including free postage within the UK.

You can choose from a wide selection of fabrics, please choose from the photos shown. I can also make bespoke face coverings to match your special outfit - please contact me to discuss.

PLEASE NOTE This product is not a medical device and is not a replacement for PPE. No warranties, either expressed or implied, are given that the face covering will prevent infection or the transmission of viruses or diseases.

Had a quick trip out to Somerset Lavender Farm yesterday afternoon to blow the cobwebs away. So pleased they are open again for business. Picked up a bag of their wonderful dried lavender to make more scented padded hearts and indulged in their yummy creamy lavender ice cream - delicious. Very dark clouds around but we managed to stay dry!

I’m delighted to say I am now open for business!

There have been some changes from how I normally see my clients, to comply with safety requirements, but I hope everyone will still be able to have a relaxed and enjoyable appointment.

All appointments will need to be booked in advance please - this will ensure that there is no crossover of appointments and there is enough time for necessary cleaning/sanitising between appointments.

To stay safe there is a maximum of two people per appointment please - this will allow for a bride/client plus a guest and social distancing must be observed at all times. I am very happy for you to invite your friends or bridal party join in virtually/via Zoom etc during your appointment.

I will be seeing clients in my conservatory, which is accessed from my garden. If the weather is fine and no fitting is required (for example for a consultation to design a dress or discuss an alteration) then we could sit outside in the garden if you prefer.

On arrival you will be asked to sanitise your hands and wear masks and gloves (I can provide these or, if you prefer, you can bring your own with you).

If you or your guest are unwell, or have been in contact with someone who has Coronavirus symptoms, please get in touch with me and I will rearrange the appointment.

To make appointments less clinical, I have been been making up some bridal style masks to help you feel more glamorous when trying on your wedding dress during your appointment. They are made in silk with a cotton lining and beaded lace embellishment. They are hand washable and soft against the skin.

Looking forward to seeing you soon. If you have any concerns at all about your visit, please do not hesitate to contact me.

The last event I attended before Lockdown was a preview evening for the Night & Day: 1930’s Fashion and Photograph Exhibition at the American Museum & Gardens.

We were invited to walk the red carpet on arrival and photographed by a press photographer, complete with 1930’s camera and popping flash bulbs! Alas, the press attention wasn’t really for us but for the glamorous film star gracing the event. I had a lovely chat with her and complemented her on her stunning ivory satin gown and accessories.

The exhibition was full of exquisite dresses and some of the day dresses would not look out of place today. The beach wear was a tad on the formal side but did include a rather natty early version of a jumpsuit! I do hope the exhibition will still be there when the museum reopens, as I would welcome the chance to go back and visit it again.

It was all going so well in mid March - I was busy sewing for weddings, proms and alterations. I was just finishing a very elaborate crystal embellished wedding gown, when it became apparent that we were about to go into lockdown. I sewed through the night to get it finished and safely handed it over to my client. Almost immediately I had five weddings cancelled/postponed and prom season was no more.

Within a few days one of my friends died from Coronavirus and another had become seriously ill (now thankfully recovered). Lack of income was a serious concern and I couldn’t see any light at the end of the tunnel.

Then, out of the blue, I was asked to urgently make scrubs for the NHS and the challenge was exactly what I needed to get me back on track. Since then I’ve been asked to make non-medical face masks for clients (freeing up medical masks for the NHS) and they are proving very popular at the moment. Some clients have taken to leaving their alterations (carefully pinned!) in my porch, whilst out on their daily exercise walks and then collecting by the same method. So we are all managing to adapt within the guidelines.

I’m not sure what the future holds for my business - there could be a rush of weddings when lockdown is lifted and it could be very busy indeed - but most of my brides moved their weddings forward by a year, so it could take a while to fill the gap. Perhaps I’ll be busy altering garments rediscovered during wardrobe clear-outs or items requiring alteration after too many visits to the biscuit tin! These are challenging times indeed and we will need to be adaptable and possibly find ways to diversify in order to keep the work coming in.

Please get in touch if you'd like to order a mask or I can help you with anything else.

Although we can’t celebrate VE Day as planned prior to lockdown, we will be having a ‘We’ll meet again’ sing song with neighbours tonight on our doorsteps. This is me and lovely Lisa Patel at the Lacock at War event, wearing the 1940s dresses I made.

After spending days making her dress, I had my heart in my mouth when she decided to try out some twirl manoeuvres - and yes, she did wear those Dr.Martens Bristol boots with her dress!

Very proud of my beautiful daughter getting ready to go off to prom in the lace and tulle gown I made for her using gorgeous fabrics from Craftswoman Fabrics. It was a bit of a rush doing up all of the 25 tiny satin covered buttons on the back of her dress - couldn't find my crochet hook which makes the process so much faster!
