The secret to a flawless prom dress hem? The Baby Hem. 👇

Today at the studio, I’m altering a gorgeous prom gown and replicating the delicate hem.

The baby hem (or rolled hem) can be a tricky technique to master. But when you have 8 metres of skirt to get through, you get lots of practice! 😂

That moment when you realise you’ve been talking to the post man with your experimental bust pattern attached to your body!
On the plus side I’m pleased with the shape 🪡
Here at the creative studio we explore different ways of getting the right pattern for your body.
Whether that’s altering and adapting dressmaking patterns, creating your own patterns with body measurements or using clothes that already fit as a base. Or in this case more experimental options without the postman of course 😂
Either way, the results are the same… clothes that fit you and your style 🧵

This week we’re shining the spotlight on Alison and her beautiful wrap trousers she’s made in our weekly sewing & dressmaking class! 🧵

Using the “You Sized” pattern from my first book, Girl with a Sewing Machine, Alison has created something stylish, wearable, and completely unique to her measurements — proof that with just a few body measurements and around 2 metres of fabric, you can create clothes you’ll genuinely love to wear ✂️

When Alison first joined, she’d have described herself as a beginner. Fast forward to now, and her confidence has grown so much — with every class she’s challenging herself more, learning new techniques, and creating garments she’s proud of. And isn’t that what sewing is all about? 💫

Whether you’re a complete beginner or already have sewing experience and want to build your skills, my weekly classes are designed to support you at your own pace with expert tuition from me, Jennifer Taylor — author of Girl with a Sewing Machine 📚🪡
