Brothers We Stand

Brothers We Stand Ethical men's clothing, selected with style. Brothers We Stand was set up in solidarity with the men and women who make our clothes.

Our vision is to support you to build a wardrobe of stylish and sustainably made menswear. We carry out rigorous research and every product in our collection meets the following three standards:

Ethical production - Manufacture respects both people and planet. Read more about the BWS Standard here. Designed to please - Products look good and perform the jobs they were created to do. Created to la

st - Clothes are made to be enjoyed for many years. We believe in celebrating the positive aspects of production without greenwashing, and so each item on the site has a footprint tab detailing its social and environmental impact. We list the use of pioneering ethical practices as well as the aspects of manufacture that could be further improved. In doing so, we aim to provide you with a transparent window onto the supply chain of the products you buy.

Our mission is to connect you with pioneering ethical designers. Our curated website is the main place we do this. The Guardian have called it ‘The home of e-commerce with a heart.’ After that, our newsletter is probably the place that right now we can share with you with a space and ease that feels comfortable. Instagram has been a fun place to build community but with the feed algo prioritising discovery over people you follow it can feel less of a natural space for that now. The app still (?) has its place but personally we are a bit concerned by the zuckerverses sucking up of time that could be spent in deeper pursuits (we’re more Zach than Zuck). So we wanted to drop a friendly reminder that if you’re signed up to our newsletter you won’t miss out on any important updates from us if you check in here a little less often.

We’ve also added a link in our bio to The People v Big Tech. They have some great resources and ideas on what the platforms need to do better to deliver on the promise of ‘Social’ media.

Peace and long reads

We sell brands with good stories. And we believe our community wants to live good, deep, nuanced stories.

When it works well, social media can be a fun way to connect with others. It has also been a really useful tool for independent businesses like us. But we’re concerned that right now it is dominated by a handful of big tech companies that have prioritised building advertising empires over serving their users. It no longer always feels like the obvious choice for authentic connection.

So if you ever want to take a break from the gram. No sweat. Sign up for our newsletter at the link in bio. We’ll look forward to sending you our hand crafted community updates directly.

👨📢 NEWS FROM JONATHAN AT BROTHERS WE STAND

We’ve topped up our knitwear collection with some lovely o-neck lambswool jumpers by KnowledgeCotton. The dark grey melange in particular is so wearable. I could live in this jumper all winter.

I’m happy with how our knitwear collection has shaped up this season. Across four brands, we’ve got RWS certified wool and organic cotton. Bold colours, neutrals and prints. Rugby tops, roll necks and o-necks.

Naturally

From the place where we are right
flowers will never grow
in the spring.

The place where we are right
is hard and trampled
like a yard.

But doubts and loves
dig up the world
like a mole, a plow.
And a whisper will be heard in the place
where the ruined
house once stood.

Words by Yehuda Amichai and Stephen Mitchell

We sometimes get feedback that the clothes we sell on Brothers We Stand are expensive. We get it, so we thought we’d take a minute to share a few of our thoughts on the subject.

Our current version of capitalism has locked us into a system that doesn’t value what matters the most. And the results are plain for all to see.

Clothes made at a more human scale. With fibres grown gently. By hands valued for their labour. That all costs more. But it’s worth so much more.

To you. To us. To our future.

Is it fair that not all can afford to participate? No. The system has bigger problems that are not easily fixed. Is the cost worth it if you can afford it? It’s your call.

In Rajlakshmi Cotton Mills we trust.

What if you could have full confidence that your shirt was made by a good factory? This Bouclé shirt by was made by a factory that stands up to a closer look.

With roots dating back to 1934, Rajlakshmi is one of India’s most established fairtrade factories. They have built a reputation for high quality tailoring and respect for workers.

The factory takes a proactive stance to trade unions and negotiates workers wages directly with them. This stands out as many factories are wary of opening their doors to unions as they fear demands they won’t be able to meet - and only 5% of garment workers in India belong to a trade union. (Fair Wear India Country Study 2019)

Other perks of working at Rajalakshmi are a 70% subsidised meal each day and support for children’s education up to university level.
