KB Alterations My specialisation is wedding and ball dresses. However I do a lot of general alterations and repairs I grew up in a home where sewing was part of life.

My mother sewed almost all our clothes and studied dressmaking and patternmaking at college. I went on to do the same course at college, in Australia, nearly 30 years ago. Upon moving to Cambridge, I worked for seven years, in a small boutique wedding dress shop where I honed the specialist skills of altering ball gowns, flower girls dresses, bridesmaid and wedding dresses. I enjoy fitting ladies

special occasion wear as well as doing general repairs and alterations. For example, shortening hems of clothing and curtains, replacing zips and if possible repairing that favourite item that you want a bit more wear out of.

Remember the end of school ? It’s been a lovely few weeks of seeing excited girls coming with their end of GCSE or A Level ball gowns. Such a variety (some pictures of just a few below). Alterations varied from just the hem shortening to all seams being taken in. They’ve all worked so hard – it was well deserved party time

The first few months of the year have flown by. Lots of the ordinary (shortening hems, replacing zips etc) and some out of the ordinary (shortening a wedding dress ready to wear at the first anniversary, made to measure covers and sheets for a river boat cushion and a coffin drape).
I’ve been taking bookings for quite a few school leaver balls and look forward to seeing those lovely dresses.

I can hardly believe we are now into 2025! The last sewing jobs of the year were hems. Simple shortening of some corduroy jeans and the not so simple shortening of a seven layer wedding dress.
Thank you to all my customers 2024 has been a great year with a huge variety of work.

One of the first post summer sewing jobs was this cute little lacy top that had been sitting at the back of a wardrobe for a few years. All it need was the straps shortened and the sides taken in (zip one side French seams the other) and now it's perfect 😊
