GoDaddy hosting security breach

Web hosting provider GoDaddy has revealed that a data breach led to malware being installed on some of its services.

Back in December 2022, they received customer complaints about websites being redirected to malicious sites. It was later discovered an unauthorized third party had gained access to servers hosted in its cPanel environment.

GoDaddy said the objective of the intrusions was to “infect websites and servers with malware for phishing campaigns, malware distribution, and other malicious activities.”

This is not the first time the company has faced security breaches. In 2020 the login credentials of close to 28,000 customers were compromised, and in 2021 a rogue actor accessed its Managed WordPress (MWP), affecting over a million customers.

GoDaddy says it has added security measures to stop similar attacks in the future, but the latest security breach may now cast serious doubts on the hosting and domain services it offers.

Abandoned cart recovery in 2023

Shopping cart abandonment is not a new phenomenon. In fact, research from Baymard Institute shows that the average cart abandonment rate is as high as 69.80% and a natural consequence of how people use eCommerce sites.

Their study cites a number of reasons for cart abandonment – the main one being online shoppers using carts like wish lists, looking for the best deals and abandoning them before checkout. Other reasons included high shipping costs, needing to create an account or a too complicated checkout processes.

So what can retailers do to encourage shoppers to complete their purchase besides design changes and rethinking fees? One popular strategy with a high ROI is to send out abandoned cart emails.

Statistics from a SaleCycle report on 500 leading global brands, showed that 44.1% of abandoned cart emails are opened and almost a third of clicks on abandoned cart emails (29.9%) lead to a recovered sale.

If you have a WooCommerce store there are a range of abandoned cart recovery plugins to choose from. A lightweight option we recommend is Abandoned Cart Lite for WooCommerce.

The plugin has free and paid versions but the free version works just fine to capture email addresses for follow-up emails.

There is a default email template that follows the standard WooCommerce template style, or you can add your own email code into the editor. The plugin template section has a preview and send test email function so you can check layout and content before you enable recovery mode.

Converting shoppers who have abandoned their carts into loyal customers can be a process of trial and error. Personalized follow-up emails with the right subject line, design and copy, work if they set the right tone. Pinterest is a good place to find email inspiration and Mailchimp has a good article on best practices to get the best open rates.

There’s no such thing as the perfect abandoned cart email, so it’s worth testing out different subject lines, copy and sending times to see which emails recover carts and increase your online sales.

Wordfence, the popular security plugin for WordPress, have released their State of WordPress Security Report 2022 with some key takeaways for 2023.

Most attacks in 2022 looked for an easy way in via reused credentials or by capitalizing on previous infections. Wordfence data indicates that this is becoming an increasingly viable option for attackers as unmaintained sites with infections become more common.

Each year, leaked passwords from data breaches become available to threat actors making it easier to gain access to unmaintained accounts.

Despite record numbers of vulnerabilities being disclosed and patched in the WordPress ecosystem, the vast majority of attacks in 2022 targeted vulnerabilities in practice and process, rather than in software.

Even attacks targeting specific vulnerabilities predominantly focused on obtaining site takeover on the few remaining vulnerable installations of plugins with easily exploitable critical flaws, rather than on the much larger number of newly discovered but more difficult to exploit vulnerabilities.

As such, the greatest threat to WordPress security in 2022 was neglect in all its forms. Keeping WordPress core, plugins, and themes up to date remains an important best practice.

2023 Social media trends

Hubspot, a leader in the digital marketing industry, asked over a 1000 social media marketers which social media platforms they’d be using in 2023. The results below are their ones to watch in 2023.

01. Instagram
Social media marketers anticipate Instagram to experience the most growth in 2023. It has the most accurate algorithm and provides brands with the best opportunity to expand their audience.

02. TikTok
Short-form video and live streaming are tipped to be the most popular social media trends in 2023. So it will come as no surprise that social media marketers expect TikTok to have the second-highest potential for audience growth in 2023.

A hubspot consumer trends survey found that 62% of Gen Z use TikTok so it’s a great platform to reach out to them.

03. Facebook
Facebook usage dramatically grew in 2022 and given the top trend for 2023 is investing in social media communities, Facebook is now the platform to watch.

04. Live audio platforms
23% of marketers are planning to leverage live audio chat rooms in 2023. Facebook Live Audio tops their list with 12% having already invested in it.

But here’s how you can get real inspiration from Fenty Beauty’s approach to communicating their products, new releases, promotions, and their brand in general.

Visit Milled - https://milled.com/ a search engine for email newsletters, type in ‘Fenty’ and click the brand to see all the promo and sales emails Fenty Beauty sent out.

Studying the effective subject lines, the strategic upselling and stunning use of photos, could help take your email campaigns to the next level.

How secure is your password?

Back in 2020, cybersecurity firm Hive released a chart that went viral when it showed the strength of a password against a brute force hacking attempt.

The data was based on how long it would take an attacker with a consumer-level budget and high-end desktop computer and graphics card to decrypt a password using brute force – a systematic trial and error attack that submits many passwords or passphrases with the hope of eventually guessing correctly.

Two years later, which is a long time in terms of processing power improvement, Hive released an updated chart which you can see below.

How do you make a strong password?
As the chart indicates, you should use a password of at least 10 mixed up characters for maximum security. Anything simpler than that will only take hours to crack.

Don’t neglect the 404 page

The 404 page can be the most neglected page on a website. The standard template comes with a warning that the content you are trying to view doesn’t exist and in fact may never have existed – a strange concept indeed.

The 404 error happens for any number of reasons – a broken url, a user typing in the wrong url, or a web page being deleted or renamed without a 301 redirect in its place.

Whilst the 404 page can be frustrating for a visitor, it is an opportunity for the website owner to be creative and re-engage the user, so they explore rather than leave the site.

Here are some of our 404 pages where we encourage visitors to click on a link.

Artificial Intelligence is all the rage at the moment so we’ve been playing around with some of the free AI image generators for fun.

We asked the AIs to do a Cubist style painting of Marilyn Monroe and this one was our favourite.
