This tiny vase/candle holder holds a fascinating history and is full of beautiful detail!
It belongs to Tilgmans of Sweden- 1948-1975 and founded by Paul Harald Tilgmann.
In the early years, Tilgmans was popular for its animal figures, but evolved when artistic director Marian Zawadzki joined, starting in 1953 as a Polish refugee.
Zawadski developed a technique using ‘sgrafitto’ - carving fine lines into backgrounds to reveal light coloured glaze to dark grey clay-slip. His unique style became a distinct identity for Tilgman’s and was easily recognised as their own.
The birth of the 70s was a turning point for Tilgman’s and Zawadski’s work, bringing a darker and more rustic style as you see here. This was very popular in Scandinavia at the time and takes on the earthern elegance that comes with the style and strongly influences interior design more than ever. You may see that some techniques used in their early work still reside in this piece, using similar techniques of carving. Zawadski expresses timesless and rustic designs, using bold and abstract techniques and keeping the smooth, silky glaze. Quite the contrast from his previous work, being more delicate, but equally striking.
In 1970 Zawadski left Tilgman’s Ceramics, moving to Vallda - the west coast of Sweden, where he opened up his workshop Vallda Keramik - Gothenburg. 🇸🇪
When observing some of his pieces, particularly this one, it may be that the patterns, textures and colours used were inspired by the coastlines of Sweden, the movement of waves and reflections on the skyline. 🌊
This unique piece is perfect for collectors and admirers of studio ceramics and design history.
