Life is full of stress. Stress deprives us of sleep, and not sleeping causes us stress. How do we stop the vicious cycle? While stress can be a complicated problem, one way to begin to manage the stress stopping us from sleeping is to identify the triggers.

A good way to work out what’s causing the stress is to make a list of all the situations, worries or challenges that we feel trigger a stress response. It’s easy to assume that everything that causes us stress is external, but usually it’s a mix. For example, things like moving house, unexpected guests arriving, or loud noises can be stress triggers, but we can get just as much stress from a fear of failure, feeling like we’re not in control of a situation or putting ourselves under pressure to create the perfect celebration. Here at snooze.london our main stress triggers are clearly trying to ship a million orders at once (external) and dealing with the expectations of developing the most amazing sleep mask ever (internal).  😉

Once we’ve identified our stress triggers, we can begin to think about how to deal with them. We can’t avoid all stressful situations, but some stress triggers can be prepared for or even removed. In the case of internal triggers, challenging negative thoughts and talking to friends about them can make a huge difference.

Stress may keep you awake from time to time, but it needn’t become a cycle. Stress is normal and stress is ok. Stress can be managed. So work out those stress triggers and get back to that snoozin’. 💤

When we think of lavender we often think of its beautiful scent and striking colour. But lavender has a long history of use as an effective herbal medicine. If you’re struggling to fall asleep and stay asleep then lavender oil may be just what you need.

The benefit of using lavender oil when it comes to sleep is mainly related to the way pleasant aromas affect the brain. Smell receptors send messages to the brain that affect mood, and if we perceive the smell as comforting or relaxing then that can help us relax into sleep. Being fully relaxed prior to sleep also helps us to enjoy better quality sleep throughout the night. Studies of people ranging from young students to nursing home residents have shown the benefits of lavender aromatherapy.

If you choose to use lavender oil to help you sleep, make you that it’s a high-quality product where the supplier distils their own material and uses gas chromatography and mass spectrometry to analyse the quality of the product. The oil should be made exclusively from the plant Lavandula Angustifolia (English Lavender). While some people prefer rubbing a few drops of the oil on their skin, we recommend using a few drops of oil in a diffuser an hour before bed.

Anyone else enjoy using lavender or another essential oil before bed? Let us know in the comments!

Have you tried all the sleep tips out there and still wake up feeling tired? Perhaps you go to bed at a sensible time every night, have a great bedtime routine and live a super healthy lifestyle but still find good sleep evades you. You wake up every morning knowing instinctively that you’ve not had a good night’s sleep.

There’s a lot of potential reasons for that and if you have a chronic sleep problem it’s definitely worth seeing a doctor/GP or sleep consultant. But instead of judging how well you slept by how you feel in the morning, how about measuring it? Lots of people who use Fitbits and other devices with sleep monitoring functions note that although they often assume they sleep badly, their device tells them that they’ve had a good night’s sleep. It’s always possible that the device is wrong, of course, but it’s really worth thinking about. Could it be that we are so used to feeling tired that we’re thinking ourselves into bad sleep? If there’s no clear biological reason for having insomnia, then it likely comes down to lifestyle or mentality.

Studies in many fields of medicine have shown the ability of positive thinking to affect your health, particularly illness recovery. It therefore makes sense that thinking positively about your sleep is a great way to improve it. Here’s a few tips to think more positively about your sleep.

Write down negative thoughts that are keeping you awake.

Write down more realistic thoughts next to the negative ones.

Don’t let lying in bed not sleeping stress you out, remind yourself: I have survived sleepless nights and will do so again.

Remember, getting good sleep *is* possible for you, and you will achieve it. It takes practice, but with a little bit of positivity (and monitoring) you can and will improve. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

One of the best ways to relax into sleep is visualisation: shutting your eyes and imagining yourself in a soothing place that’s special to you. For this week’s  , we feature the work of based photographer . His photos show Abu Dhabi as a modern city of skyscrapers and bright lights, but at the same time retaining a rich cultural heritage as seen in its architecture and style. We love the sleek, urban feel to Asjad’s photos, he really brings out the best of everyday city life.

Today’s photo is of the sunset over Abu Dhabi Marina and the majestic Qasr Al Watan palace, the official presidential palace of the UAE, surely one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. The warm glow of the sunset over the Arabian Sea and silhouette of the palace creates a scene we find warm and soothing, yet exotic. So if you’re struggling to sleep tonight, try imagining yourself on a warm evening sat on the beautiful promenade here by the marina, watching the boats and the waves or gazing at the distant palace. Before you know it, you may just be catching the 💤 you’ve been waiting for.

Thanks to for the great feedback on our new Ultimate 22 Momme Pure Silk Pillowcase. 💫

“Don’t mean to alarm you (⏰ 💤) but I have found the softest, most comfortable silk pillowcase ever!! I’ve been using this for the past few days and i’m in love!! 💓 ⁣”

While using the same pillow and pillowcase for years is a great way to save money, it might not be beneficial for your sleep. Here’s why?

As you sleep your body sheds skin, hair and oil which can be absorbed by your pillow and pillowcase, creating conditions ideal for the growth of dust mites. Dust mites aren't dangerous but can cause discomfort and allergic reactions, especially for people with skin conditions. Even without dust mites, our pillows take quite a beating. Our heads are heavy and bearing the weight of our head night after night will cause the pillow to flatten in places, providing less support, and impacting the quality of our sleep. If you wake up with aches and pains in your neck and shoulders, sneezing from dust mites or notice that there's permanent sweat or oil stains on your pillow then it's probably time for a new one. Many experts recommend getting a new pillow every 1 to 2 years. The same is true of pillowcases, where you may notice the fibres begin to stretch or thin over time.

Silk pillowcases are a great option if you want a durable solution that will protect your skin and hair. Pure silk is an extremely soft material that is non-absorbent, meaning that it will prevent the natural oils in your skin being leeched out (unlike other materials). Silk fibres are also coated in a protein known as sericin which repels dust mites and is resistant to mould, fungus, and bacteria. For a great pure silk option, check out the brand new ‘Ultimate Silk Pillowcase’ range in our online store. And if you decide to get a new pillow, choose one based on your sleeping position. These days there are a whole range of great options that you can choose based on your personal sleeping position to make sure you get the support where you need it and avoid any aches and pains.

Lots of the things that impact our sleep happen without us even realising. So, make sure that your pillow and pillowcase are looking after you so that you can get the 💤 you need and deserve.

One of the best ways to relax into sleep is visualisation: imagining yourself in a soothing place that is special to you. For this week’s  , we feature the work of the amazing based pilot/photographer . His photos really bring out the most beautiful side of the Netherlands, including its stunning windmills, lakes and historic canals. A quick glance at Nick’s photos and you’ll find yourself reaching for your passport… ✈️

Today’s photo is of Keukenhof, also known as the Garden of Europe, one of the largest flower gardens in the world, and particularly spectacular in spring. With 7 million bulbs planted annually, the display of tulips as well as hyacinths, daffodils, lilies and more has turned this garden into one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. In this photo, we love the way the vibrance of the flowers is offset by the soft layer of fog lying above, adding an element of mystery. If you’re struggling to sleep, or trying to employ the ‘Military Sleep’ method we mentioned in our last post, then tonight when lying in bed, visualise yourself walking through the tranquil and uplifting fields of Keukenhof. Feel the light breeze and hear the rustle of the thousands of flowers all around. Fed up of counting sheep? It’s time to count 🌷 instead! 💤
