I have been lucky over the years with charity shop finds to add to my vintage sewing collection, and a recent find in Dorothy House Chippenham has added another vintage gem to my collection. 'Making Smart Clothes' by The Butterick Publishing Company was published in 1930, and has a wealth of period tips and information regarding making 1930s garments, and even has a few pages discussing capelets, which are one of my favourite vintage accessories.
These books are a great primary source to anyone interested in vintage fashion, and I'm always excited to find original copies. I will continue to keep hunting for the next vintage gem to add to my collection 😊. G x

A lovely day out today with Ellie McCallum at National Trust Great Chalfield House, Melksham, and was finally able to wear my vintage styled palazzo pants I made a while ago using Seasalt Cornwall fabric. Such a beautiful Medieval house, and the roses were stunning throughout the Arts and Crafts designed garden. A magical experience, and can highly recommend a visit 🥰. G x

Hello Everyone.

I'm excited to finally be able to show the cloak I made a while ago, which is being worn by the Queen in the latest portrait by the renowned artist Rupert Alexander.
The cloak was based on the Admirals Boat Cloak, as featured in the photos taken of the Queen by Cecil Beaton in 1968. Melton wool was used for the cloak, and the brass lion head clasp was especially made for the cloak in Canada. The vintage lion head buttons were purchased from a button shop in Hungary, and the collar was hand pad stitched in order for it to be able to stand up if needed in the portrait.
The painting was commissioned by the Duke of Aymer on behalf of the The Worshipful Company of Drapers (founded in 1364), and will be on display at the beautiful Drapers' Hall in central London.

I feel very honoured to have one of my garments featured in a portrait of the Queen, and love how Rupert has captured the Queen and her cloak in the painting. Such a lovely project, and looking forward to the forthcoming Platinum Jubilee celebrations marking the great Elizabethan age. G x

Hello Everyone.

I am so pleased to finally share some photos of the wedding coat I made for Louise's wedding recently. Louise had bought a lovely silver beaded dress for the day, and we decided to use a sheer silver organza fabric for the coat, in order to see the gorgeous dress being worn beneath. Due to the fabric being transparent, small french seams were used, and all shaping darts were incorporated into the pattern and pivoted out in order for no darted seams to show throughout the coat. Finally, I matched a crystal and beaded trim similar to the beaded dress, which was stitched around the facing edge of the bodice, and also used to create a fastening for the coat.

I'm so pleased Louise enjoyed her special day at last, due to their other planned wedding dates having to be cancelled because of Covid. I wish them both all the best for the future. G x

Hello everyone!

Had a lovely day at Dyrham Park - National Trust with Ellie McCallum taking photos of my new 40s style dress, which was made especially for the VE Day celebrations last week. This was based on an original 1940s pattern, and the shirt waisted design was made using a Liberty Tana Lawn fabric. The bodice included small open ended darts, and the sleeves had small darts at the sleeve head, which were emphasised by the hand made fabric shoulder pads placed inside the top of the shoulder seam. Finally, vintage roundel buttons were used for a finishing touch. I will be having a covered belt and buckle made very soon as well.

A big thank you to Ellie for the great photos, and we both had a nice lunch afterwards in the lovely NT cafe ☕🍰. G x

Hello everyone!

I managed to spend a lovely day in London last week exploring the latest Victoria and Albert Museum Exhibition 'Fashioning Masculinities'. This is their 1st exhibition to explore and celebrate masculine attire and how it has been fashioned and refashioned over the centuries. The collection uses many items and displays dating from the medieval times to contemporary menswear. Such a fascinating exhibition and really enjoyed it 😊. As always, I also visited my favourite Liberty of London and loved their current Mermaid display. A lovely day out. G xx

Hello Everyone!

Just received this rather lovely vintage 1940s pattern in the post this week to add to my collection, and as ever loving the Sewing Tips page and old adverts. Looking at the pattern pieces, they look untouched so can't wait to start using them at last.

The 40s dress will be made up using a Liberty Tana Lawn fabric, and worn at the REME Museum VE Day event next month. I will post progress photos as I go along 😊 . G x

- Low Stock

I currently only make one off bespoke garments for customers, so all of my projects are 'low stock'.

Corsets are one of my favorite garments to construct, due to each panel being unique to the customer's own measurements, and the length of boning used throughout. No two corsets will ever be the same 😊. G x

Day 21: Materials

I am passionate about using natural and sustainable fabrics for all of my garments, but my particular favourite fabrics are wool and Liberty of London Tana Lawn. This photo shows how I have used both of these on a wool jacket I made recently, and the garment was lined using a lovely Liberty lawn. This photo shows the pocket flap detail, and the various pieces of wool I used for the upcycled jacket.

I will very soon only use natural and organic fabrics for the made to measure range of garments I have planned to sell via my website. G x

Day 18: Sell Yourself

I'm never great at doing this, but here goes 😊. I adore vintage and historical fashion, and chose to study BA(Hons) Costume due to my love of history and fashion. I have also studied tailoring and coatmaking in London and Savile Row since graduating, and am always at my happiest when constructing a new wool jacket/coat in my workroom. I am passionate about slow fashion and love using sustainable and vintage fabrics for my commissions.

I adore cake, and regularly meet up with my fellow Tea and Cake Club member Ellie Flora and Wick Candles and exploring our local Tea Rooms in the area. Oh, and I also love dogs 🐕. G xx
