This striking image shows Wing Commander Ian “Widge” Gleed seated in the cockpit of his Spitfire Mk VB at RAF Ibsley, Hampshire, taken in April 1942. The control tower at RAF Ibsley is all that is left of the airfield now.

A celebrated RAF fighter ace, Gleed was known for his skill, courage, and leadership during the Second World War.

At the time this photo was taken, Gleed had already earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and Distinguished Service Order, having played a key role in the Battle of Britain and subsequent air campaigns.

Tragically, his life and service were cut short just a year later, when he was killed in a dogfight over Tunisia on April 16, 1943, at the age of 26.

The Battle of Britain, September 1940, saw German aircraft crashing in the suburbs of London.

Intense air combat took place over southern England, especially around London, from July to October 1940.

Both the RAF and Luftwaffe suffered heavy losses, with several German planes being shot down and some crashing in residential areas.

Out of an assault force of just over 22,000 men, the Germans suffered approximately 5,500 casualties, including around 3,600 killed or reported missing in action during the Battle of Crete.

Due to the heavy losses suffered, they were never used in any future large-scale airborne operations.

From that point on, aside from a few smaller missions, they primarily served as elite infantry for the remainder of the war.
