It’s been a long time!

We have had so much going on.

Yesterday we started dyeing our first batch of yarn 🧶

It does look like freshly picked spaghetti before it’s dyed 🤣🙈

What colour/s would you like to see? 💚

This arrived in my ️The Business Box this morning and really resonated with me.

I have been assessing how I want to work and how to create an income that will allow us to travel once hubby retires.

I love to read but mostly read fiction - what self development books do you recommend? 💚

Hopefully you are aware that we are a Vegan company and that our 3 core values are

💚 Not using animal or animal by products in any of our products or processes

💚 Commited to sustainability and being as eco-friendly as is possble

💚 Upholding the values of slow fashion - making products that will last and are made ethically

With this in mind we know that are target market is eco-concious vegans that are looking for high quality sustainable knitwear.

If that's you give us a shout!

If it's not there are lots of reasons that you WILL absolutely love our hats

Allergies and sensitivities? Plant fibres are highly unlikely to cause any reaction or irritation and as we are hand dying we choose the safest dyes available

Concerns about Man made fibers - the environmental impacts are much more widely known and as we educate ourselves on the impact they can have more and more people are moving towards natural materials.

Wanting to support ethical british businesses - there is a growing trend to be more mindful about who actually makes the items we wear and supporting business that choose to be ethical along the whole of the production process.

We would love to know which of these resonates with you.

What woould encourage you to buy a Vegan Hat Co Hat?

History of Hats

Did you know?
Basically a way of covering the head, hats have been around for thousands of years, worn by men, women and children for protection, fashion, ceremonies and rituals, and have been used to denote class, rank or religion.

Probably made at first from simple leaves, straw and leather, then felt from animal fibres and plants like flax, as fashions changed and new materials were discovered and utilised a greater diversity was able to be created.

Hat wearing trends ebb and flow. Only a generation or two ago, people wore a hat most days - from Bowler hats in the city, to Stetsons on cattle ranches.

Many countries have headgear styles that have lasted generations, the Fez, Sombrero, Ushanka - even the Base Ball cap, continue to be popular

Styles come and go, brims get wider and narrower, materials and colours change with the seasons.

Hat wearing in the West fell out of favour in the 70’s but certain styles never lost their appeal, and the knitted or crocheted hat is certainly as popular today as it has ever been.

Whether it is mass produced or lovingly hand crafted, and worn for a variety of reasons it continues to keep our heads warm in colder months. For such a small item that is essentially made to fit one shape, the variety in styles, shapes, colours, patterns and adornments is seemingly endless!

We are certainly looking forward to creating unique products for all of our customers

Yesterday's question was really quite hard hitting and I'm not sure todays will be any easier!

What we really need from you now are your thoughts about colours.

What about bright and loud is that for you?

How about neutrals are they more you?

We don't want to make this any tougher but we would love to know if you like solid colours, stripes, varigated or patterns.

Take your time, perhaps grab a drink and take a moment of reflection to consider................
Pompom or no Pompom?

We are at the stage of discussing patterns and styles that we will be producing.

Kath will be designing the Knit hats and Keely will be designing the crochet ones.

We will be making hats for men, women and children and would love to know what your favourite style is.

Feel free to choose one from the grid or let us know in the comments especially if there isn't one like it in the grid.

This is one area we absolutely want to get spot on for you.

Organic v non organic cotton

Cotton is a material with a very chequered history. A crop grown for millenia throughout the world, it is synonymous with the enslavement of millions, child labour, sweat shops, massive water consumption and chemical processes that have affected soil and the food chain, wildlife and workers!

💚It has shaped history and politics all over the globe, and contributes to deforestation.

💚It had controversial links to GMO crops and the companies that control them.
Cotton was and continues to be one of the most produced products in the world.

So how does Organic non GM cotton fair?
Widely seen as the only viable alternative to conventional cotton growing it is grown without GM seeds, without the use of toxic chemicals that then helps maintain soil fertility, reducing the use of pesticides and fertilisers and encourages a biologically diverse agriculture.

The healthier the soil becomes, the less water the ground needs to grow the crop as it will retain its moisture levels, soaking up water during floods and holding onto it, relying on rain rather than extracting ground water 💧- it actually helps to cool the planet - how cool is that?

Look out for the GOTS label on your cotton products (Global Organic Textile Standards)

Yesterday we discussed the one issue we had found with the Organic Kadi Cotton Yarn.

We also said we had a trick up our sleeve, and we are considering the possibility of offering a lining. We have some samples of cotton/hemp materials that would be suitable as a lining.

The picture shows the samples some are too thin but there are a few for us to choose from, one has a gorgeous fleecy side which is so soft next to the skin.

Why would we line the hats?
There are several benefits the main reason for us would be to counter the likelihood of the hat overstretching. The lining has a 4 way stretch which contains sufficient elasticity to bounce back to shape. By lining the hat, the yarn will automatically maintain its shape where it is connected to the hat.

Other benefits include
Warmer hat
Increased comfort
Life of the hat extended

We would love to know if you would like the option of a lining in your hat?

We found so many positives with the Organic Kadi Cotton and both felt that the hats would be so lovely to wear and that is absolutely one of the key things we want for our hats, your comfort and experience of wearing one will be affected if the hat isn’t nice to wear.

Our only issue was the structure of the hat, the yarn gives a floppy, slouchy swatch. This would be lovely for a scarf but for a hat this could cause issues – for example the hat could stretch out of shape meaning that the brim would become too large for you to wear it without it slipping.

This isn’t ideal and we imagine it will cause frustration to you when wearing it. We haven’t completely discounted it as we may have a trick up our sleeve!

Tune in tomorrow to find out more……..
