🧸 Sleep Cues 🧸

🧸 Understanding and becoming responsive to your little ones' sleepy cues is beneficial to both of you.

🧸 As you near the end of your little ones wake window, begin to look out for their sleepy cues to be able to identify the perfect time to put them down for a nap/bedtime for a successful sleep.

🧸 When you recognise that your little one is showing signs of getting sleepy, it is time to quieten down the activities and environment. Perhaps look at a short story book together. Your little one may then start to portray cues that they are ready to go to sleep, this is when you start your sleep routine and place them in their safe space to sleep.

🧸 It's really important to learn the difference between the "I'm tired" cues and the "I'm overtired" cues. We don't want your little one reaching overtiredness as it's at this stage you'll experience tricky sleep times, which, as we know, isn't fun for anyone!

🌟 Sleep Pressure 🌟

🌟 What is sleep pressure? Sleep pressure is one of the two drivers of sleep. The longer we are awake, the higher our sleep pressure builds.

🌟 High sleep pressure is what makes us feel sleepy and feel ready for a nap/bedtime. Cracking a well timed nap can be key in making sure sleep pressure isn't too excessive - this makes for grumpy behaviour, and over tiredness takes over which may present itself as fighting sleep and interrupted sleep and wake ups throughout the night.

🌟 If your little one has low sleep pressure, they will struggle to fall asleep simply because they are just not tired enough. This will present itself as taking longer than 25 minutes to fall asleep, fighting sleep and tricky bedtimes.

🌟 We do, however, need to make sure we are maintaining enough sleep pressure for good overnight sleep.

🌟 This will take time to master and you will really need to understand your little ones' sleep by looking out for their sleep cues and experimenting with sleep times. There'll be some trial and error as you adjust timings and naps, but it will be worth it. Sometimes, this may be the only change you'll need to make. Dreamy!

πŸ’€ AGE APPROPRIATE SLEEP πŸ’€

Does your routine follow these patterns?

If you are unsure of what wake windows and nap times your little one should be following, this table is a great place to start. You can use it to help guide you from newborn through to preschool age.

* Please note these are averages. It is okay if you find your child needs more or less sleep than in the guide above. Holistic sleep coaching is all about finding what works for your child. *

Tomorrow, I will cover why sleep for your child is so important. Enjoy your Friday evening ✨️.

⏰️ How many of you have heard this already and had to fake a smile or a laugh?! When really I know you're swearing on the inside, dreading your usual 6am starts about to become 5am starts! I would be, too!

⏰️ A lot of parents wonder what's the best tactic to take in regard to the clock change.

⏰️ I've put together 3 techniques you can try that will cause as little disruption as possible to helping your little ones adapt.

1. Starting from Friday; move your child's daily routine, including meal/nap times, 15 minutes later each day.

2. Try putting your child to bed 30 minutes later the night before and then at normal time on Sunday evening.

3. Do nothing! That's right, nothing at all. Put your child to bed at their normal time after the clocks change. Since our internal body clock is influenced by numerous factors such as diet, natural light, and sleep; its likely they'll naturally adjust back into sync within a couple of days.

⏰️ Don't forget the clocks fall back one hour on Sunday 29th 2023 at 2am.

⏰️ What technique will you go for?

πŸͺ Crying is a baby's only means of communicating. Why wouldn't you respond to that?

πŸͺ Babies do not start developing the ability to recognise and manage their own emotional responses until they are at least six months old. Therefore, they are unable to self-soothe. Leaving a baby to Cry-It-Out is simply leaving them to hit exhaustion and just give up.

πŸͺ Being responsive to babies and children builds their trust and confidence that their needs will be met. A secure attachment between baby and caregiver is crucial for healthy emotional development.

πŸͺ The Cry-It-Out method is a one size fits all approach. Not all children will respond in the same way. Looking at why your child isn't sleeping from a holistic approach will take all factors into consideration such including developmental stage, temperament, diet, wake windows, naps, family, environment, and so much more. It is bespoke to yours and your child's needs.

πŸͺ Holistic sleep coaching focuses on gentle alternatives to create consistent sleep routines and provide comfort and reassurance for babies to gradually be able to self-soothe in a loving and supportive manner.

🌞 As we've been spoilt with these extra few days of warm sunshine, I thought it would be a good time to create a post with information on the link between vitamin D and sleep.
There is scientific based evidence to suggest vitamin D plays an important role in sleep regulation.

🌞 This is due to the role it has in the production of melatonin, our sleep hormone, which is connected with the regulation of human circadian rhythms and sleep.

🌞 A vitamin D deficiency in children has been associated with decreased sleep and poor sleep efficency as well as later and drawn out bedtimes - which we're trying to avoid!

🌞 During spring and summer, our bodies are able to produce the correct amount of vitamin D we need. However, in autumn and winter, we need a little extra help. So, how can we get Vitamin D into our bodies?

πŸ’Š Supplements
The NHS recommends that breastfed babies should have a daily vitamin D supplement from birth to 12 months. This does not apply to babies fed 500ml or more of formula each day. This is because it is a legal requirement manufacturer's add vitamin D to formula.

The advice from the Department of Health is that all children from 6 months up to 5 years are given daily vitamin D supplements.

🍽 Diet
The best food sources of vitamin D are...Β
*oily fish - including salmon, mackerel, sardines
*egg yolks
*red meat
*liver
*fortified foods such as breakfast cereals, plant milks, and fat spreads

🌞 So, now that autumn has hit; it is a good time to get out and soak up the last of those sunny rays, fill up on some rich vitamin D food sources and stock up on the recommended supplements.
