Just been playing around with a quilting stitch (straight stitch emulating a hand sewn stitch). The standard length setting is 2.6 on my machine. Normal thread in the bobbin, nylon thread for the top thread. I had to tighten the tension a little to achieve the correct looking stitch. I experimented both with shortening and lengthening the stitch length, would also look good for topstitching around pockets, sides of seams, collars etc And then I thought how about replacing the nylon top thread another colour.. it has a slightly knotted effect, not unattractive I don’t think… could be used decoratively. Drawback is the nylon threads glints under lights. Stitch no.40 on my machine. Last picture shows the back.

This is my long overdue review of the lovely Diana dress - sorry Tash! I went against the recommended fabrics and used a viscose, simply because I had it in my stash! But I think it’s worked out pretty well and was not too difficult to work with. I made a toile of the bodice, just to check for fit. I was glad I did, as I found I had to amend just the front and raise the princess shaping as it was far too low for me. This meant amending across the revere as well, and I still don’t think the fit is quite right for me. If I make it again (and I’m sure I will), I think I’m going to change the princess seaming to come from the shoulder, as I don’t think coming from the armhole is the most flattering for me personally. I love the fit at the back and the swing of the dress it feels really lovely on. I should also probably take it in a little more on the waist, I think you can see from the photographs that it’s a little loose, especially from a front view. I made a size 10. The instructions are fabulous, beautifully clear, comprehensive and well written with very clear diagrams, a joy to follow. I did do one or two things differently. I sewed my facing and bodice side seams all in one as for the sleeveless version. I interfaced the back, the side backs and front side facing in a softer interfacing than the front and collar facings. I also hung my dress up for about 48 hours before doing the hem as I found the hemline dropped considerably, particularly at sides because of the flare. After levelling I hemmed the dress using lace, I also did this on the sleeve hems (see photos), which I thought gave a nice touch. I think it’s a great pattern, not for a beginner as the collar/rever is quite complex which needs careful stitching. There are lots of pattern pieces to cut out and careful preparation is required. However, Natasha talks you through it all really well. I think I shall wear it a lot come the springtime. I have some dark charcoal wool fabric in my stash which I think would look really nice in the sleeveless version - watch this space! Thank you Natasha :)

Fabulous two days at with the amazing Tim O’Sullivan copying garments and learning pattern drafting techniques. Meeting lovely new people, scrumptious lunches and snacks and of course, buying fabrics in the wonderful M&M shop - perfect! 👌

A lovely fluid, easy to wear viscose summer dress. It feels cool and feminine with a little ‘swish’. I love it. Pattern is Eva dress which I have adapted - I drafted the skirt to be my own. The bodice is such a good and flattering fit, I’m making it my ‘go to’ bodice. Fabric is from It’s SO pretty. I want the summer to go on and on just so I can get loads of wear out of it this year :)

This is a make from a couple of years ago, but was perfect for today’s weather, so I thought I’d show you my Miller Waistcoat. Made in two of their lovely linen fabrics, a plain and a co-ordinating check. Lovely to work with. I had to do extensive alterations to the pattern to fit me. The armholes gaped front and back - I took out the fullness by creating bust darts and shoulder darts at the back in which to transfer the extra fabric. Because of my hollow back, I had to curve the centre back seam at the waistline and because of this, I also decided not to set the belt in at the side seams. This reduced any bunching across the waist area. I found I preferred the fit with the belt more or less flat across the back waist, more flattering for my figure. Love the little pockets and the fact that this pattern is styled to be easily worn on its own (though I also increased a little across my back to hide my bra straps, but that’s to do with my broader back). For all the adjustments, I’m pleased with the result and it’s 👍 from me 🙂

Following on from the blue beach dress, I added a bit of flare to this one so to be less snug than the other dress. I used this lovely soft jaquard towelling from The pattern is self- drafted. The pattern matching was challenging to say the least, partly because the stretchy weave of the fabric caused it to pull a little off grain. I don’t think it’s perfect. I know I understand pretty well about pattern matching, but even so, I’m still always fairly amazed when it works out well and I don’t think it’s too bad in this case. 🤞 It’s lighter in weight than the blue one and will be so useful for camping showers and beach cover-up. One happy lady :)
