Plylow goes down under! 🇦🇺🌍

One of our recent customers has moved to Sydney, Australia, and sent us this adorable photo of their daughter sleeping through an overnight flight 🥰

Due to it's slightly smaller size, Plylow doubles up perfectly as a travel pillow which can be easily packed in a travel bag and taken with you, wherever your journey takes you... As Australia moves into summer (not jealous at all) we are sure that Plylow's cooling features will help this little girl sleep through those hot summer nights 😇

‘A temperature controlled, height adjustable pillow?! How does that work?’ 🤔

Viv in action learning everything there is to know about all things plylow 🥰

Each pillow comes with an instruction manual to answer all your questions. However, here are a few quick responses to some frequently asked questions…

Q: Who is the pillow designed for? 🤔

A: Children aged 2-7 👶🧒

Q: How cold does the pillow get? ❄️

A: During testing the pillow temperature dropped from 26 degrees, to 22.2 degrees after 30 minutes… still safe, but just enough to achieve a cooling sensation.

Q: How hot does the pillow get? 🌡

A: Based on our tests, expecting a temperature uplift of 2 degrees… just enough to warm@your child’s head during a cold night 🥰

Q: How many tiers should my child have? 🤔

A: This will differ depending on your child’s sleep position and age, but the aim is to keep child child’s neck straight and supported - Generally, we recommend 1 tier for front sleepers, 2 tiers for side sleepers, and 3 tiers for back sleepers.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask 🥰

How sleep differs by age 🤯

Our little ones need less sleep as they learn and grow 🥰

Newborns are constantly growing. NREM sleep is vital to help the body grow, whilst REM sleep is vital to help children (and us adults) solidify our learnings from the day 🧠

As we grow older, our bodies and brains grow at a slower rate, so we can do with less of this magical healing tool 🙂

So we've all heard of melatonin, but did you know there's two types? 🤔 Read on for more info...

Most people are aware of the first type of melatonin; the chemical that controls our sleep cycles and tells our body that it's time to sleep. But few know that this wonderful neuro-transmitter is regulated in more ways than one...

Our body stores this magical chemical in two ways:

1) Through blue light - This type of melatonin is made in our brains, and when our brains are exposed to blue light (through our eyes) this tells our brain that it's daytime and we should be alert. This light source is primarily released by skylight and phone screens.

2) Through red light - This type of melatonin is stored in our cells, and builds up as we are exposed to infra-red light via sunlight throughout the day. Essentially, this builds up as our body is exposed to direct sunlight. When night time comes, this store is released to help our body wind down. This light frequency is released by sunlight, open fires, and other light sources such as saunas.

Knowing this, we can help our little ones wind down easier. Two key takeaways:

1) Expose our children to blue light during the day (preferably through natural sources) to help keep them alert through school and play. But make sure to restrict exposure to screens for atleast an hour before bedtime.

2) Expose our children to infra-red rays throughout the day by getting them outside. If you're into camping or lucky enough to have a fire at home, sitting by the fire for a while at night will help us release melatonin before bed and get in a restful state of mind, preparing us for sleep.

Ever wondered why you get drowsy in the sun, or feel alert after binging your favourite show on netflix? The answer: melatonin.

We hope this helps 😀

Sleep Tips ❤️

As part of we want to share some quick & easy tips to help your little ones (and you) get a good night's rest 😴

If your child is suffering with poor sleep, we would recommend taking time to see whether your child's daily habits could be the reason. Routine is key, and it is important that we send signals to remind our body that it's time to rest during the hours leading up to bedtime 🙏

Some of our recommendations include:

❄️ Keep room temperature low - Our bodies are adapted to sleeping in a cool environment, and our body naturally releases heat before bed. Keeping a cool room can aid sleep.

💨 Keep the room ventilated - Feeding on from the previous tip. Keeping your child's room ventilated will ensure that the room is cool, fresh and inviting. This will help get them ready for sleep.

📵 No screens before bed - Screens emit blue light, which tricks our brains into thinking that it's still daytime. This blocks the release of melatonin, and stops us winding down. Furthermore, playing games late at night keeps our brains active during the night, and can disrupt sleep quality.

Do you have any sleep tips?

Lessons our children can learn from 🥰

1) Accept people for who they are ❤️

At the beginning, the family are separated by their expectations of one another. The family relies so much on their gifts, that anything that harms their miracle is pushed aside. This happens to Mirabel, and her estranged brother Bruno (but we don't talk about him). When the family begins to accept each other, peace is restored! By accepting people, we bring the best out of everyone 🥰

2) Not everything our children do needs to be perfect 🙂

Isabela is that golden child who can bloom flowers out of thin air. We believe that Isabela relishes in her perfection, until we find out that she is worn down by the expectation of perfection. When she mistakenly creates a cactus, this allows her to truly express herself. People should be free of expectations of others, and free to create what they like 🌺

3) Support your community, and they will support you 💪

The Madrigals have supported their community with their powers. When everything goes wrong and the family miracle becomes broken, they end up losing their house! This is quickly resolved when the village offer to help them build a new house! By helping others when they need it, will ensure that we get help in our time of need 🙏

4) Everyone has a special gift 💫

Mirabel is the only child not to receive a special gift. This often leads to her feeling as though she is not good enough for the family. However, it turns out that Mirabel's gifts lie in her will to help her family, her love for everyone around her, and her will to help protect the family miracle. She was that missing piece of the puzzle that everyone needed! It just goes to show, just because our special talents aren't on show all the time, this doesn't mean we don't have special gifts underneath the surface 😇

Love ❤️

Plylow would not be where it is today without Viv, our chief pillow tester!

Throughout the entire process, her opinion has been at the forefront of everything, including the size, feel and shape of the pillow.

Fun fact: Viv uses her Plylow every night! Her favourite way to use the Plylow is with 2 tiers, and occasionally uses the multi-temp insert to keep her head cool when she's too hot 🥵

After all, a product for children should be designed by children, right?
