These tiny bears seem to be taking their yarn stashing very seriously - one has already wound their skein into a ball, ready for action. I tried embroidering lots of different expressions on these bears but seriously grumpy was both sweetest and most bearlike.

The skeins are the lovely hand-dyed merino shade 'Orinoco' from Colliston Yarns (scraps left over from human-sized projects) and I knit and stuff the bears in Jamieson's Spindrift Shetland wool.

Goose Barnacles (Lepas sp.) washed up by the recent storms. They live an exciting cosmopolitan life roaming the seas attached to flotsam, ships (or less excitingly rocks) by their long, fleshy stalks.

The ‘Holiday line’ disused railway today, along which sheep had recently been driven, leaving wisps of fleece caught on the bare brambles. As children, my mum got us to scour brambles and barbed wire for snagged sheep’s fleece, which she would use to stuff pincushions. The unwashed fleece’s lanolin was supposed to both stop the pins from rusting and help them to slip through fabric more easily. Might be time for me to revive the practice - although I’m not sure if modern pins are as prone to rusting?

A peaceful morning finishing red squirrel brooches - I've already hand knitted, wet felted, trimmed, brushed, blocked and embroidered them and now I'm sewing on the brooch pins 🐿

The squirrels are good little portable, in-between-times projects and I'm loving carrying them about in my little Thistlemoss project bag. I know you don't need lovely notions to knit well but it's definitely an added pleasure to use beautiful stitch markers, embroidery scissors and project bags, etc. (though I still often resort to loops of yarn, the old kitchen scissors and a mangy shopping bag!)

I'm adding this batch of squirrels to my online shop (link in bio) and they're also for sale in the .

Want to knit your own squirrels? - you can find my 'Red Squirrel Brooch' pattern free on Ravelry and on my website (they also make great tree decorations stuck on a bauble or pinecone)... or you can find kits on my website.

Thanks to the Journal of Scottish Yarns who originally published this pattern.
