SKIRLINGTON MARKET – IMPORTANT OBJECTION INFORMATION
This post contains two guides because visitors and traders will have slightly different points to raise. Please use the guide that applies to you.
A planning application has been submitted to redevelop the Skirlington Market site. The plans remove the entire market area. If approved, the market will have to close with no replacement offered. Your objection as a visitor or trader is extremely important.

PUBLIC OBJECTION GUIDE
Please write your comment in your own words. These planning points may help you:
• Skirlington Market is a long-standing community facility. The planning statement claims it is not, but many local people use it every week to socialise and stay connected.
• The market is a major visitor attraction that is open to everyone. The new proposal replaces it with a closed private facility for holidaymakers only.
• The market brings visitors into the area every week. Many people holiday nearby because the market is here. Removing it reduces tourism choice and visitor spending.
• Local residents rely on the market as one of the few affordable places to shop and meet people.
• Families depend on the market for low-cost shopping options, especially during the cost-of-living crisis.
• The Local Plan aims to protect community facilities, support rural jobs and strengthen tourism. Removing the market does not meet these aims.
• No alternative site or replacement facility has been offered.
TRADER OBJECTION GUIDE
Please write your objection in your own words. You can refer to these valid planning points:
• The market would be fully removed with no replacement. A 40-year-long community facility would disappear.
• Many traders would lose their businesses and livelihoods. The planning application does not recognise or assess this impact.
• No relocation, temporary site or support has been offered to traders. The suggestion of relocating to Hornsea Freeport is unrealistic and not a like-for-like market environment.
• The market brings thousands of visitors into the area weekly. Local villages, shops, cafés and petrol stations rely on this economic activity.
• Skirlington Market is a major visitor attraction in its own right. Removing it reduces tourism and visitor choice.
• Strong community connections exist between traders and customers. These relationships have been built over decades.
• The proposed new facilities are private and restricted to holiday park users only. The public would lose access to a long-standing attraction.
• The proposal conflicts with Local Plan aims to protect rural jobs, community facilities and the visitor economy.
• The application does not address job losses, loss of public access or the impact on the rural economy.
Thank you so much for taking the time to help us protect Skirlington Market.
