North East pride, amplified. Sam Fender has claimed the 2025 Mercury Prize for his album People Watching - hailed by judges as “cohesion, character and ambition.”

The award ceremony took place in Newcastle’s Utilita Arena, marking the first time in its history the Mercury Prize was hosted outside London.

Fender’s album People Watching, released earlier in 2025, has already produced Top 10 singles and earned wide acclaim for blending everyday life, emotion and raw storytelling.

This win isn’t just for him - it’s for the region. It sends a message that great music doesn’t just come from the capital.

SWIPE⬅️ and follow (us)

Newton Aycliffe holds a special place in County Durham’s story, it was the North East’s first new town, officially founded in 1947. Built after the war to give families a fresh start, it rose from farmland into a community built on hope, housing and hard work.

The town’s industrial roots run deep too. During the war, Aycliffe’s Royal Ordnance Factory employed thousands of women, the “Aycliffe Angels” - making vital munitions for Britain’s front line.

Today, Newton Aycliffe is home to around 30,000 residents, still proud of its post-war beginnings, its industrial heart and the community spirit that’s never faded.
