A wee video of my award winning florid scrolls.

The dubbed the jewellery Oscar’s for being the largest competition for jewellery, silversmiths and the allied trades in the UK. This competition is vast with over 800 entries. I was shocked to win not only the gold award for my piece in the Junior engravers section but also the overall junior award from all of the entries! This is amazing to have my work recognised at such a high standard.

This piece has been done as part of my gun engraving apprenticeship with the expert knowledge of following on from my training with her. Hand engraving is recognised by as an endangered skill and it is very important to me to keep such a wonderful heritage skill alive and be able to showcase it to you all.

I was fortunate enough to be awarded a prestigious scholarship in 2023, this is my story.

I studied Jewellery and Silversmithing BA at The University of Edinburgh there I focused on creating silverware decorated with traditional hand techniques. I specialised in hand engraving going on short course with and training with Malcolm Appleby.

A few years of running my own business later and I wanted to expand my skillset into gun engraving, something that I have had an interest in since my first job at 15 working in a country store.

For my scholarship I decided to learn from Cartier award winning Scottish gun engraver . She taught me the basics of traditional gun engraving and carving steel. It is very important to myself to keep traditional hand skills alive for future generations especially one that is recognised as endangered by the hca. I was very proud to have my Celtic beasties steel plate win a gcdc award, I learnt the skills to create this from my QEST training so it was wonderful to see the hard work recognised!

The QEST scholarship has been invaluable to me and I have been fortunate enough to take on an official apprentice role with Karen and being able to work on a selection of prestigious luxury British shotguns! What these scholarships allow not only for makers to learn and develop in their practice but to keep endangered hand skills alive is so vital. If you are able to donate just £35 or participate in their upcoming auction you can be helping a future maker and their passion in the British craft industry!

Back at the start of February I had the lovely take some photos of my workshop and will start sharing them soon but I loved this photo of my hallmarks!

These are used on the silverware and jewellery that I make, in the UK all pieces of silver over a certain weight have to be tested and marked by one of the four assay offices in the UK. The marks include the makers mark as shown in the picture, the date letter (this year it is the letter A) the finesse mark for silver you will see a lion and a number (sterling silver is 925) and the assay office mark, Edinburgh is a little castle!

We have this historic set up in place so that consumers know that what they are purchasing is genuine, it is also a lovely thing that means future and old pieces of silverware can be traced back to makers and when they were made like and artists signature.
