What if the North’s future isn’t more work—but more life?

AI and automation could help us produce more with less labour. But cheaper goods mean little if people lack the income to buy them. The question is who shares in those productivity gains.

Could shorter working hours and shared jobs help protect incomes, open doors for the next generation and give us more time to live?

That also creates an opportunity for the North: to build a stronger tourism and creative economy around our countryside, communities and extraordinary history.

Our mills, wool, cloth and industrial heritage tell a story of ingenuity and skill. Today’s makers can carry that story forward through things made by human hands, with provenance, quality and character.

This is blue-sky thinking, not a guaranteed forecast. Industry still has a role. But a northern strategy should also back the places, people and creativity that make our region worth visiting—and worth investing in.
