Ahead of my escape to the Greek sunshine, I had almost no idea what to expect. Island life and sunshine was about all I knew. My main priority was some serious rest and relaxation after a really challenging time.
We travelled to Poros — NOT Paros. I hadn’t realised there were two islands with such similar names, and so many people I’d mentioned the trip to said they’d been and it was fabulous. Turns out most had actually been to Paros, the bigger, shoutier island. We were heading for the Athenians’ favourite island escape instead.
What can I say? I fell completely in love with the place, despite the transport challenges getting there (it’s an island — miss the last ferry and you’ve got a problem!). It’s gorgeous, almost unspoilt, with the friendliest locals, incredible food, the most relaxed vibe, and sunshine the whole way through. I will be back, for sure.
I’d highly recommend travelling in either June or September. I can’t imagine how hot it gets in peak summer, and I suspect the island might lose a little of its charm once the crowds arrive from Athens and beyond.
Poros. NOT Paros. You heard it here first….
