I'm taking part in Portrait Artist of the Year. Heat 8, with fantastic result.

Filmed back in April this year I am proud to announce I was selected to take part in this iconic TV event. You will have to watch the series to see how I got on. All I can say is I got to paint one of my design heroes and had a great result in heat 8 of the series.
Portrait Artist of the Year will kick off on Wednesday 9 October 2024, with new episodes weekly. Once episodes have aired, they will be available to stream on Now.

It’s official: Sky Arts’ flagship show will return this autumn, bringing all the painting goodness to our screens. Filmed in spring 2024, expect our expert judges to return, joined by a star-studded line-up of sitters from stage, screen, literature and sport.

This is why artists varnish their work. Its the most satisfying part of finishing a painting when the colours transform and the varnish even adds depth the surface of the painting. A question I am always asked is when is it a good time to varnish your work. Well the answer is not quite as straight forward as you would think. When it's dry is the the short answer. However, oil paint never really dries, Ever! It depends on how thick your paint is, how much medium,thinners or liquin you use. I usually give it a minimum of 6 weeks drying time before I apply 3 or 4 coats of professional artists gloss varnish with one day between coats. Never use domestic household varnish, it will yellow, cloud and crack and you'll never get it off.

Two self portraits inspired by the current cost of living crisis that Grim Britain is currently going through and our world wrapped in plastic. When placed together it reminds me of an old fable. The poor man(who has nothing) sees a rich man in his reflection as he is finally warm and sheltered and wraps himself in plastic. The rich man (who has everthing) sees a poor man in his reflection as he feels some minor discomfort and wraps himself in expensive cloth. Relativism.
