Our history with slavery is everywhere.

Some more history of the building:

Construction of the mansion house started in 1777 for William Cunninghame of Lainshaw.

In 1789 Cunninghame sold his house to landowner and Tory politician John Stirling, who lived there until 1817. Stirling’s family also owned Pollok House (the big gaff in Po***ck Country Park).

It was then a Royal Bank of Scotland branch for a few decades before being sold to subscribers to Glasgow’s Royal Exchange.

Through the scheme’s leader James Ewing of Strathleven, the building retained its link with slavery.

Ewing himself was a slave owner with business interests and investments in Jamaican sugar.

In the Exchange, Glaswegian businessmen met to trade commodities including sugar and cotton, which were produced using slave labour.
