I’ve added a limited number of silk & cotton blend tops to my online shop. Handmade from fabric digitally printed in Glasgow by the tops slip over the head, with a vintage shell button fastening at the back of the neck.

My first visit to Northern Ireland, with a wee trip to Donegal for good measure. Of course I had to visit a woollen mill and collect some seaweed along the way. Oh and I’m a knitter now! With thanks to my host

Katazome dyed Irish linen. Naturally dyed with madder (pinky-red) and a mix of madder & safflower (peach). The colour has changed drastically from when it was brushed on - see my previous post. I think I preferred the earthier tones - lots more experimenting to do!

I took advantage of today’s sunshine and worked on some katazome textile samples outside.

This is my first attempt brushing natural dye (madder in this case) onto fabric that I’ve applied resist-paste to. The samples are in the steamer now in order to fix the dye to the fabric. I’m looking forward to seeing the results!

I’m using dye recipes and techniques I learned recently while taking a weekend course

I had a fantastic evening at the Treasures of the Deep exhibition opening on Friday. It was lovely to meet the other artists and seaweed enthusiasts. With thanks again to for curating and organising the surrounding events.

The exhibition runs until 1st March and I’m back in St Andrews tomorrow for an artist’s talk and Q&A, pop along if you can!

The St Andrews Botanic Garden is hosting a programme of events surrounding their upcoming ‘Treasures of the Deep’ exhibition.

Using their algae collections as a starting point, the programme brings together artists and scholars for conversations that offer new perspectives on our relationships with the natural world - past, present, and future.

I’m doing a short talk and Q&A with next Thursday 24th February, book a spot via the link in my bio.

A visit to St Andrews today to drop off my work for their ‘Treasures of the Deep’ exhibition, which opens this Friday.

I had a walk along West Sands Beach, where hundreds of cuttlebones had washed up. Of course, I couldn’t resist taking some home.

‘Treasures of the Deep’ is a week long exhibition will feature historical specimens from the garden’s algal collections, contemporary artworks, and diverse cultural perspectives on seaweed.

Tickets available via the link in my bio.

I’m travelling home after a fantastic weekend spent at in Brixton, where I learned how to print with natural dyes.

These photos are from the first day of technical printing. Left to right:
Safflower, avocado, madder, sorghum, red onion skins, coreopsis, dock root & sappan wood. (Before steaming & washing, which alters the colours).

Thank you to Flo and Lara for sharing your knowledge.

Yesterday I visited St Andrews Botanic Gardens, where I was shown some of the Margaret Gatty collection of pressed seaweeds.

It’s amazing to see how well preserved these specimens from the mid 19th century are, the colours and arrangements are beautiful.

With thanks to and for showing me around. I’d love to come back again!
