🖤 Protection, Returning Negative Energy & The Ancient Art of Egg Cleansing 🖤
There are certain questions I hear time and time again in Magic Touch Gothic, and two of the most common are:
🌙 "How do I return negative energy to someone who has sent it to me?"
🥚 "What is an egg cleanse, and how do I know if it has worked?"
These are questions rooted in centuries of folk magic, spiritual protection and cleansing traditions.
But before we begin, there is something important to understand about witchcraft.
Not every run of bad luck is a curse. Not every difficult person is sending negative energy. And not every uncomfortable feeling means someone has worked against you.
Sometimes life is simply difficult. Sometimes we carry emotional burdens that have nothing to do with witchcraft.
A knowledgeable practitioner learns the difference between responding through fear and working with clear intention.
And that brings us to our first question...
🪞🌑 1. RETURNING NEGATIVE ENERGY TO THE SENDER
One of the oldest principles within many protective magical traditions is that you do not have to accept what does not belong to you.
When people speak of a Return to Sender working, they are usually referring to a form of defensive magic.
The intention is not necessarily to harm another person, but to symbolically reject unwanted influences and restore personal boundaries.
There is a difference between protection magic and baneful magic.
Protection work focuses on yourself, your home and your peace.
Baneful workings deliberately seek to cause misfortune or suffering to another.
These distinctions matter, particularly when working with intention.
🪞 MIRROR MAGIC
Mirrors have long appeared in magical folklore as symbols of reflection, truth and the unseen.
Within some protective traditions, a mirror is positioned facing away from the practitioner, towards a doorway or symbolic source of unwanted influence.
The purpose is to reflect rather than absorb.
A simple protective affirmation might be:
"What is sent with ill intention shall find no home with me. I release what is not mine, and I stand protected within my own energy."
The mirror becomes a physical reminder of that boundary.
🕯️ BLACK CANDLE PROTECTION
Black candles are often misunderstood.
In many modern witchcraft traditions, black represents protection, grounding, banishing, absorbing or releasing unwanted influences, rather than evil.
A simple folk-inspired working may involve a black candle, a lemon and cloves.
The lemon symbolises cleansing and the removal of bitterness, while cloves are associated in some magical traditions with protection.
Cut a lemon in half, place three cloves into each half and arrange them beside a black candle on a fire-safe surface.
As you light the candle, speak your intention clearly.
"I release all that weighs upon me. What is not mine shall not remain. My home, my spirit and my peace are my own."
Allow yourself a few quiet moments to concentrate on that intention, then safely extinguish the candle.
Never leave candles burning unattended, especially around dried herbs or other flammable materials.
✨ THE POWER OF INTENTION
A ritual does not need to be elaborate to have personal meaning.
One of the most useful lessons within practical witchcraft is learning when to act — and when to leave something alone.
You do not need to perform a protection ritual every time someone upsets you.
Sometimes the strongest protection is refusing to engage, setting boundaries and removing yourself from harmful situations.
Not every battle requires a spell.
🥚🌙 2. THE EGG CLEANSE — AN OLD FOLK HEALING TRADITION
The egg cleanse, often known as a limpia con huevo in Mexican and other Latin American folk-healing traditions, is a ritual with deep cultural significance.
Egg-based cleansing practices also appear in other folk traditions, although their methods and interpretations differ.
In these traditions, the egg is used symbolically as a vessel for drawing away unwanted influences, spiritual heaviness or what practitioners understand as the evil eye.
An egg is a powerful symbol in folk magic because it represents life, beginnings, transformation and potential.
The traditional belief is that an egg can take on unwanted spiritual influences during a cleansing.
However, this is a spiritual belief, not a scientifically demonstrated process.
🌿 HOW TO PERFORM A SIMPLE EGG CLEANSE
Begin by creating a peaceful space.
You may choose to light a candle, say a prayer or simply sit quietly for a few moments.
Hold a fresh, uncracked egg in your hands and focus on the purpose of your cleansing.
What are you ready to release?
Stress? Anger? Emotional heaviness? A difficult experience?
Start at the head and gently pass or roll the egg down the body, working towards the feet.
Some traditions use prayers, while others use spoken intentions.
You might say:
"From crown to sole, I release what weighs upon me. Let my mind be clear, my heart be calm and my spirit be at peace."
Take your time.
The ritual should feel calm and deliberate, not frightening.
Once completed, crack the egg into a clear glass containing water.
This is where another fascinating part of the tradition begins.

🔮🥚 3. HOW TO INTERPRET YOUR EGG CLEANSE RESULTS
Within certain folk-healing traditions, the appearance of the egg after cleansing is interpreted symbolically.
Different cultures, families and practitioners may assign different meanings to what they see.
There is no single universally accepted interpretation.
Here are six commonly circulated traditional readings:
🫧 BUBBLES SURROUNDING THE YOLK
Sometimes interpreted as protection, the release of unwanted influences or energy being cleared.
🕸️ LONG STRINGS OR THREADS RISING THROUGH THE WATER
Often associated symbolically with emotional attachments, unresolved situations or unwanted influences.
Some practitioners refer to these as energetic cords.
🔱 SPIKES OR SHARP POINTED SHAPES
In some modern egg-reading traditions, pointed formations are associated with jealousy, gossip, obstacles or conflict.
🌫️ CLOUDY WATER OR WHITE FORMATIONS
Sometimes interpreted as emotional heaviness, stress or feelings that have been difficult to release.
👁️ EYE-LIKE SHAPES
The evil eye is an ancient belief found across many cultures.
Eye-like formations are sometimes associated with envy or unwanted attention in folk interpretations.
🌕 AN INTACT YOLK RESTING AT THE BOTTOM
Often interpreted as a symbol of balance, grounding or stability.
BUT HERE IS SOMETHING IMPORTANT THAT EVERYONE SHOULD UNDERSTAND.
An egg naturally contains proteins, membranes and structures that produce strings, bubbles, cloudy formations and unusual shapes when cracked into water.
These patterns are not reliable evidence that someone has cursed you, wishes you harm or has caused an illness.
And this is where I believe knowledge becomes particularly important.
Respecting traditional witchcraft does not mean abandoning critical thinking.
Folklore, spirituality and science can be discussed together without confusing belief with established fact.
The reading may hold symbolic or personal significance, but it should never be used to frighten someone into believing they are cursed.
Once you have finished, dispose of the egg in the bin rather than down the toilet. Do not consume it, and wash your hands and any surfaces that have touched the raw egg.
You may then wash your hands with clean water as a symbolic way of closing the ritual.

If there is one thing I would encourage anyone interested in witchcraft to understand, it is this:
Witchcraft should not leave you living in fear.
You do not need to see enemies everywhere.
You do not need to blame every misfortune on a hex.
And you certainly should not feel that you need to purchase expensive rituals or repeatedly cleanse yourself because somebody has convinced you that you are carrying something sinister.
For many practitioners, cleansing and protection rituals provide moments of reflection, reassurance and renewed intention.
They can become meaningful ways of marking an ending, letting go of an experience or reclaiming a sense of control.
And sometimes that is precisely what a person needs.
