Crafts by Katie Turning your baby and loves ones clothes into beautiful keepsake quilts since 2016.

Something made me pause for a moment while I was prepping this baby grow. I noticed a small label on the sleeve and a special popper. I can't always make use of these small parts. This is why I love the Ayla quilt! Half the quilt is made up of smaller patches and really help capture those small details in the clothes that made them special.

This is a medium sized Ayla quilt and used around 25 items. If you have any questions about having your own quilt created, please feel free to drop me a message.

Well… yesterday I dropped my sewing machine off at the doctor’s 😞

I’d finally stopped to make myself a pair of trousers I’ve wanted to sew for months — it’s important to me to enjoy sewing for myself too! And of course, that’s the exact moment my machine decided to give up on me.

Thankfully it’s half term, so I’m taking it as a good excuse to spend a bit more time with the family. I’ll still be in prep mode while it’s being fixed though!

I thought this little monkey was a pretty fitting nod to how I’m feeling about my machine right now 🤣

This is a little peek at one of my latest quilts. The small patches are part of the Ayla quilt, which is currently my most popular style. It’s perfect for making the most of even the tiniest details.

As always, if you’ve got any questions about having a keepsake made, feel free to drop me a message 😊

Challenges & Wins ✂️

This quilt was a big one for me… my first ever king size.
It was heavy, took over every bit of space I had, and honestly felt like a full-on workout at times 😅

But I’m so glad I said yes to the challenge.

Since then I’ve made so many more large quilts, and each one has felt that little bit easier because of this one.

One of my favourite parts of what I do is when customers trust me with something new or a bit different. Those are always the projects that help me grow the most 💛

March Meet the Maker – Design Details 🤍

It’s never just about cutting squares.

When I make a keepsake, I’m always looking for the little details that make each piece special… the things that instantly bring memories back.

That might be a favourite comforter, a tiny label with a quote, a pocket, buttons or even a little bit of a tutu.

Sometimes I’ll carefully unpick something just to sew it back on in a way that it can be seen and appreciated again.

These are the details that make your keepsake completely unique, and the reason no two quilts are ever the same.

It’s not just fabric, it’s memories stitched back together 🤍

March Meet the Maker – Who It’s For 🤍 (a day late because I was celebrating having a 6 year old!)

Keepsakes are for everyone.

We often say baby clothes quilts are “for the child”… but if you’re anything like me, they’re really for us too, because letting go of those tiny outfits is harder than we expected.

Those little sleepsuits and first outfits hold so many memories, and turning them into something you can keep forever just feels right.

But keepsakes don’t stop there.

They’re for grandparents, aunties and uncles, anyone who wants to hold onto those memories.

I often make a main quilt and then add cushions as well, which are perfect for gifting to other family members, especially when the clothes belonged to someone who is no longer with us.

It’s about sharing those memories, not packing them away 🤍

Mother’s Day can hold many different emotions. For some it’s a day of celebration, for others it’s a day of remembrance, and for many it’s a mix of both. Today I’m thinking of all the mums, step-mums, grandmas, mother figures, and the people who step into those caring roles in our lives. 💛

In my work at Crafts by Katie I’m often trusted with very special fabrics that tell stories of love, family and memories. Some of these pieces celebrate the wonderful mums who are still with us, while others honour mums who are deeply missed. Every patch, every cushion and every keepsake holds a story.

Today I’m sharing a few keepsake pieces featuring messages about mums — some made to celebrate, and some created in memory of someone very special.

However today looks for you, I’m sending a little extra love your way.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums and mum figures out there. 💐

I opened this email from a customer today and it gave me a huge smile and with march Meet the Maker's prompt today being "Why I Make", it felt like a great opportunity to share it.

"The quilt has just arrived and I am blown away by just how lovely it is! So many memories in all those squares and I am delighted with the backing and binding fabric too! Absolutely love the card that you made as well - such a thoughtful touch. Thank you so much!"

Messages like this are exactly why I make keepsakes.

This particular quilt was made from clothes that had been carefully stored away for over a decade. Some of the vintage-feel t-shirts (including Noddy and Thomas the Tank Engine) were really fun to work with.

It’s also proof that it’s never too late to dust off those clothes stored in the loft and turn them into something that can be used and enjoyed every day.

I’m always so grateful to be trusted with them.

Day 9 - what I make

Hopefully if you’ve found me here, you already know that I make keepsakes.

I like to think of myself as a preserver of memories, turning much-loved clothing into something that can be used and enjoyed again. Most often that means quilts, but I also make stockings, cushions and a few other keepsake pieces too.

Every item I make starts with clothes that hold a story, and my job is to give them a new life.

Day 6 – Trial & Error

This photo is from one of the last craft stalls I did in 2016 before I focused fully on keepsakes.

I’m holding George when he was only a few months old, and the stall around me is a bit of a jumble. At the time I was making all sorts of things. I printed baby grows and sold a mix of handmade items including bunting, baby clothes, hair bands and even some willow weaving.

I knew I wanted to create for a living, but I was spreading myself far too thin.

Looking back at this photo now makes me cringe. It also reminds me how much trial and error has been part of this journey. It took time to figure out what felt right.

When I eventually decided to focus on keepsakes, everything started to make sense. My work improved, the business became clearer, and I could really develop the skills needed to do it well.

This slightly chaotic stall was part of the journey.
