Winter’s knocking, which means it could be time to give those trainers a well-earned rest and get acquainted with something a little more substantial.

Red Wing boots are just out there, taking the weather, the wear and the stupid shortcuts in their stride. They’ll look after your feet, age like a fine w**e and probably outlast your New Year’s resolutions.

Get yourself over to the site and get booted up.

In the North West of England, there are many curious specimens of the human variety. But few are quite like the North West Coffee Connoisseur, a man on a mission to visit every single coffee shop in the region before next summer. Armed with a spreadsheet, a laminated map, a frankly alarming caffeine habit and an unwavering devotion to Robusta, he’s taking the local coffee scene by storm. Not always in a good way, mind. There’s been a barista in Macclesfield left quaking, a full-blown incident in Altrincham and, in Bolton, a cup of tea that very nearly brought the whole operation crashing down.

But our man is nothing if not resilient. He’s back on the road, his Ralph bag packed with beans, an emergency cafetière and a laminated photograph of a particularly good flat white. The spreadsheet is growing, the stakes are high, and somewhere in the North West, an unsuspecting barista is about to receive a very educational morning.

NW Coffee Connoisseur, you beautiful little bean lunatic.

It’s that time of year again. The sky’s leaking a lot, the pavements are sweating and there’s a bloke outside eating a wet sandwich. Nature’s healing.

Best get the Snow Peak Gore-Tex on before you start feeling like a discarded tea towel. Greige, waterproof, and ready for whatever deeply unpleasant weather Manchester’s cooking up next.

Available online at Oi Polloi.

Brownie’s Breaking Bad

From a quiet brew on a barge to poking about in an abandoned building near Trafford Park. Nigel and Brownie have clearly taken a wrong turn somewhere. Either that or there’s a very good reason Brownie knows his way around these parts.

Dodgy Albuquerque dealings? A secret lab? Or just a man after a second-hand lawnmower? We’re not asking because we’d quite like to keep our kneecaps, cheers.

Head over to the Oi Polloi Blog for the full story on these derelict digs.

There are gentlemen, and then there’s Lord Ponsonby of Longsight. A fella with the air of a disgraced aristocrat, the wardrobe of a country gent and the general demeanour of someone who’s definitely got a few questions to answer. Old money meets Stockport Road, and not a straight answer in sight.

Smart but scruffy, posh but practical, his Lordship is never less than three layers deep and rarely seen without a bag that looks like it could contain the secrets of the Crown Jewels. Whether he’s off to a country estate auction or making a discreet getaway through the precinct, Ponsonby’s dressed for every eventuality. Even the suspicious ones.

But who exactly is Lord Ponsonby of Longsight? Disgraced aristocrat? Retired bookmaker? Just some fella from Manchester with excellent taste and a flair for the dramatic? We’ve got our suspicions, but we’re not asking questions.

Read the full Deck~Out on the website. God bless Longsight. And somebody keep an eye on that bag.

Brownie’s Barge, a Brew & a bit of Ralph

It’s been a while since Nigel and John Wilcock, better known as Brownie, had a proper catch-up, so naturally we decided the best place to rectify this was on a barge. Not just any old barge either. Brownie’s barge.

As a very old pal of Oi Polloi, it felt about right to go and see him on his floating Mancunian HQ first thing on a Saturday morning. There was a fire, there was a brew, there was Nigel, there was Brownie, and there was a significant amount of talking sh*te.

Brownie was also dressed up in some Ralph Lauren, which gave us a decent excuse to have a proper look at some Polo and RRL while we were there. It was nice to see a load of good gear hanging about and looking like it’s been there all its life. Much more our sort of editorial.

The full story is over on the Oi Polloi Blog now - go on, have a look.

Deck~Out No.425

Say hello to Dave Dover of the Daves. Roadie, van owner, gaffer tape enthusiast, and a man who once drove a van full of amplifiers into a garden centre in Warrington.

Nobody’s quite sure which band Dave actually works for. He just turns up. Usually behind a speaker stack, carrying a flight case and asking where the kettle is.

He’s been to Berlin, Bologna, Bolton and a grim Travelodge outside Crewe. He’s got a pocket full of ‘bits’ and a van full of mystery, but still no faith in the sat-nav.

P.S. Dave’s favourite band? Doves. Strange for a guy called Dover.

We’ve found two shirts and decided to talk a load of flannel about them.

They’re Polo Ralph Lauren. They’re checked. They’re brushed. They’re flannel. One’s doing blue and purple things, the other’s gone green and pink. Also they’re a little horse involved somewhere.

Could keep talking about them, but you’ve probably got things to do. Like looking at shirts on the internet.

Both are online now. Go and investigate the situation.

Deck~Out No.424

Meet Zig Zag Wanderer: Stoke resident, massive Captain Beefheart fan, and firm believer that music should be strange, deserts should be empty and steak & kidney puddings should cost more than a fiver.

His Dad toured with Beefheart in the 60’s, so Zig’s musical education was less ‘Top of the Pops’ and more “FAST AND BULBOUS” shouted from the back bedroom. He’s got stories about John Peel, a healthy obsession with the American desert and a stare that suggests he’s spent far too long wondering whether a cactus has got a soul.

Read Zig’s full story on our website.
